My girlfriends grandfather passed away a little over a year ago and at the time i heard them talk about a watch he owned. Her grandmother talked to my father in-law, My girlfriends uncle and her brother about the watch but nobody wanted it because they said it was too small and looked like a ladies watch. I never saw the watch. Last night we were at my Mother in-laws 50th birthday and because it was held 2 hours from our home, we slept at her grandmothers place. She heard me talk about watches at the party so when we came home, drunk at 4am, she showed me the watch. To me, it is absolutely stunning. She want the watch to go in generations and offered me to buy it at a low price. I can't believe nobody wanted to own this watch, let alone because of it's history. She bought it for him at their wedding in 1972. I don't know if it's authentic or not but I really don't care. I think it's beautiful eitherway. If you know anything about it, please let me know and maybe i can tell the family a little bit about it. (Sorry for the bad pictures. I, for some reason, can't upload it in high quality and...I was pretty drunk)

Curious about the “low price” she offered it for. Not sure if legit, but it looks like a great watch.

Possibly only a nominal fee as OP is family I.E she is not looking to making a profit as a business

She said that she would sell it between 10.000-20.000 danish crowns which is around 1500-3000 dollars. I will gladly pay 3000 dollars but I think the price is symbolic for her. She doesn't care about the money

It is probably 34mm, which is small for a modern watch but IMO it looks like it fits you fine. For authenticity, you can take it to a watchmaker and they can open it and check.

But the main reason I’m commenting is because you have a mother in law and a father in law, and… a girlfriend? Am I dense or why doesn’t that make sense to me?

Haha, long story. In denmark it's best to be married when you buy a house, for your childrens security if something happens to you. Therefore when we bought our house we got married very quick, without any family attending or anything, and she really wants a proper wedding. So we agreed that we only gain the titles of husband and wife when we get married properly

Ha! That makes sense thank you! I was going crazy trying to figure it out!

You should wear the watch to the wedding cermony

Great idea. I will defenitly do that!

It's a Rolex air king, 34MM. It's a great watch, I own one with the exact same dial and I have large wrists. The older Rolex were smaller than today's, but it's a classic piece.

This is probably a reference 5500 but take it to a trusted watch repair shop or authorized Rolex dealer to get it verified. If it's old and hasn't been serviced I'd recommend doing that while you're at it.

I love mine but it's not the most popular model. You can pick them up for $2,000 -$3,800 USD depending upon the dial, date, condition, etc.

Great watch, enjoy it!

Edit: given the date she bought it, it's definitely a ref 5500

Pretty similar to the one I bought my wife when I asked her to marry me (in lieu of a ring). It’s her most prized possession:)

I have this exact watch. It's my dad's wedding watch actually and it got passed down to me.

I don't know if it's a fake but I can confirm that given the dial and it's size, its a rolex air king around the time of 1970s to 1980s. Last time I checked it went for somewhere around 3-5k? I'm not too up to date on the price only because I'm not looking to sell it.

Whats your wrist size

I have an Air King from 2007 and I have a 7" wrist. Here is an interesting video on the history of the Rolex Air King. Very cool.
