My friend keeps telling me to watch kpop demon hunters. I am almost certain it's a mid tier garbage movie but just because it has a couple catchy songs and good animation it appeals to the general masses.

Can anybody confirm or deny this?

Its an enjoyable movie. IMO it's not garbage. Its not S tier, but it's a good fun movie.

I hate K Pop and find the culture around it cringe as fuck. Would I still enjoy it?

I'm not a kpop fan (don't hate it, just not for me), and I still found it enjoyable.

I'm in the same situation

Yeah I know it's supposed to be a fun movie because it's shiny and has western influence diluted kpop music, but does it have any substance?

From what I can tell most people just relate it to Frozen.

Does it have substance?

It's a kids' movie first and foremost, but it's not out and out stupid if that's what you're asking.

I'd say it's got like a C for writing and an A for presentation. It's pretty, well executed, and the songs are solid. It's no Wreck-It Ralph, though.

The issue I have is my friend believes it to be some kind of storytelling masterpiece that makes people cry.

Nah, I mean I can see why someone might feel that way, but it's missing a good chunk of plot resolution after the big third act twist, going into the big climax. Kinda just floats by on vibes from there on.

Sounds like your friend is a Koreaboo. It's time for the intervention.

It's got some good substance to it. A good story with some fun songs to go with it.

Not sure if you're familiar with the youtuber. But I saw he recently put out a commentary on the movie comparing it to the last Disney one released. He is certainly not a targeted demographic for the movie. But found himself really liking it. I'm certainly not the targeted demographic either at roughly 50 years old. But I might give it a watch as well.

It's a good movie. It's not just a couple of catchy songs and good animation. It's funny, it has heart, satisfying character arcs, cool fight scenes and a decent, meaningful story. I don't think it does anything revolutionary, but it is competently made and has a wholesome message.

I think the issue for most is that it is clearly made for girls and we're still at a time where that means that it can't be considered good. I'm certainly not the first person to observe this irrational devaluation of all things girly (though there are always outliers that do specifically celebrate girly things), but since I got a little older and could let go of my own shame of enjoying some girly things, I have noticed that more and more. I suspect it's because "manly" stuff is celebrated so much. Even the trashiest, mid tier garbage "manly man" movies are somehow considered at least "ironically" cool and good, while girly movies have somehow to achieve way more to get the same amount of respect... anyway, rant over.

I think Kpop Demon Hunters is actually good and you will enjoy it if you like animated action-comedies and can enjoy movies that are targeted at girls (instead of boys).

I just left a short review in the weekly thread with this movie. While I do not count K-pop amongst my proclivities, it was an enjoyable albeit shallow fare - though it never promised to be more.

If you piss your pants at the thought of enjoying a movie, maybe you just don’t like movies

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 4 days ago

I watch many movies and wanted to be mentally prepared before I ate shit.

If OP's reaction qualifies as "pissing your pants", hyperbole is not your thing.
