Hii everyone I’m doing a bachelor of AI in Europe. I’m writing this post to ask for some advice on what to do after graduation. I’m only second year so don’t really know that much about the field or the job market yet, but I’ve already established that AI is something I’m really passionate about and really want to work or research on in the future. I always hear people say to actually work on something related to AI/ML you’d need at least a master’s degree, otherwise you’d most probably get hired for DA/DS jobs. I don’t know to what extent this is true, however, as much as I would like to continue my education after the bachelor program, I’m not sure if I could afford the tuition of a master’s and the living costs in western Europe (I’m from a non-EEU country so the tuition is expensive for me, and as my family doesn’t support me financially I’m working at the same time). I have good grades but may not be good enough for getting a PhD position directly after my bachelor’s 🥲 so… kinda confused about what to do after graduating. Should I start working and go back to school in a few years, or should I work my ass off to get enough money for a master’s? If I start working after only getting a bachelor’s, will I be able or qualified enough to work in AI/ML? Thank you for reading my post, any perspective will be appreciated.

If you want to do research you pretty much need a PhD for any larger companies. Some startups might hire you with a msc but probably they would prefer PhDs as well. I think with a bsc it will be extremely hard to get remotely close to anything involving research. There are a lot of people doing ml right now and finding a job without the proper qualifications is very rough.

There are junior DS positions or data analyst positions available with a bachelor’s. Though most AI practitioners have a graduate degree. A phD is certainly helpful but if Your goal is industry, building a track record of training models also does the job.

Plus outside of academia the software engineering part is of significant importance and something you can, if you invest the time, really set yourself apart by learning proper software engineering!
