the one who mopped the floor with the other in 5 games in 2008 playoffs

[–] 2Blitz@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

If you just wanna compare playoff matchups, I think you have to consider their previous matchups too. Duncan was far better in 99' and 03', for example. Kobe was better in 01' and 08'. 02' and 04' are a bit more debatable.

[–] Himmy_Buckets22@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

99 was first season Kobe became a starter so was too young then. he averaged 32 and was the Lakers best player in 03

sure and that's why I used 08 so people couldn't downplay Kobe's success against Duncan by pointing to Shaq

[–] Ok-Panic-4877@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Duncan, anyone who says Kobe is just because they like him and look to ignore the facts

[–] Mydixxierext4@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Like Kobe Destroying Tim in multiple playoffs?

[–] BrightenedCorner@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Or Tim destroying Kobe in 99 and 2003, and would've done so after in the 2010's

[–] 10choices@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I'm actually in awe that Kobe, as a perimeter player, only averaged 1.7 more assists per game than Duncan.

[–] LeagueReddit00@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It just shows your lack of understanding the offensive system Kobe played in.

[–] Goatellounge@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I’m actually in awe that Duncan, as a big man, only averaged 5 more FG% than Kobe

[–] 10choices@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Another weirdo. I'm just gonna delete my comment. You guys got fuckin issues

[–] mmaguy123@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

And curry as a point guard only averages 3.5 more. Your point?

Duncan better than Kobe. Duncan win more rings and overall stats higher. This not about individual glory, it's about team success.

[–] Professional-Ant8445@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Duncan win more rings and overall stats higher

Both of these are blatantly false. Lmao

[–] Blackroseguild@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Won more rings?

[–] account051@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Oh hell yeah let’s let the box scores decide all the great debates

[–] mamba-pear@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Why do you guys do this.

They’re clearly around the same level and depending on your criteria and values, there would be no wrong answers.

Both superstars with 5 rings and individual success in their respective position with great supporting casts in different ways.

[–] Poopscooper696969@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

5 rings in the same era too

[–] that1prince@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Sounds like a good comparison then.

[–] SportyNewsBear@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Meh. I would always draft Duncan before Kobe. It would just be easier to build a winning team around him. Duncan made Popovich into an all-time coach, whereas Kobe needed an all-time coach like Jackson to succeed in spite of his toxic personality.

[–] hitmantb@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Duncan won same number of rings with way less help, way smaller budget. Once Giannis and Jokic finish their careers, people will realize how difficult it is to win 5 rings with a small market, overrated franchise like the Spurs.

2 MVP 3 FMVP is also a higher tier than 1 MVP 2 FMVP. Duncan's true impact on winning is simply amazing.

[–] Sokkawater10@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Duncan’s help is underrated. Advanced statistics such as box plus minus and win shares have Manu as the most important player for the rings 3 and 4. Thinking basketball had a good video of this

[–] ejiggle@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Tim Duncan by a country mile. He sacrificed his touches and doesn't get the credit he deserves because his counting stats took a hit. Kobe is closer to DeMar DeRozan historically than he is Michael Jordan lol. Tim is like top 7 all time. Let's not get crazy here

[–] ColdPressedSteak@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Kobe avg'd 30 on 46-48% all playoffs, all 3 title runs in the late 2000s. Vs double teams from really great West teams

Meanwhile, Demar scores 20 on low 40% vs first round opponents

Some of you donkeys are actually literally insane in your hate

[–] mmaguy123@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Kobe was a better player if we are just going at individual and talent wise.

Duncan has an argument for better career.

[–] ThirdEyeKaiii@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Kobe. But I ain't mad at anyone thinking Duncan was better. It's close either way.

[–] BrightenedCorner@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Duncan by a wide margin. Kobe was amazing, a top 10 all time player, but Duncan's defense is all time level, if Kobe has a bad shooting night, your chances to win go down dramatically.

[–] Hawkdojo@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Tim no questiln

[–] Poopscooper696969@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Kobe, but they are neck and neck

[–] Ton_Lonk@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s hard to say for me, but Duncan’s contribution to the Spurs defense, even in his twilight years, helps his case. His offense, however, is not much to write home about. Comparing his TS% with Kobe’s, they’re similar, but that’s actually not helping Duncan’s case because big men tend to have better TS% than guards and wings. From a EFG% perspective, Duncan’s EFG% isn’t much better than Kobe’s and Kobe had a much higher 3 point attempt rate at slightly below average efficiency.

Like many people have said in this thread, it’s really down to what you want to see from a player. From my perspective, Kobe has displayed some of the finest offensive performances in league history along with good, but quite inconsistent defense. Duncan was able to anchor the defense of three different Spurs systems, but his offense could have been better.

It’s Duncan. Look at those team records and how Duncan sustained the spurs. One of the best winners ever. Along with more MVPs and FMVPs.
