What do you think about his stat? I think the games he focused on being a blue collar rim runner he did amazing. I don't think this is only the Spurs fault or lack of point guard, he is enamoured of playing like a wing, which to me is the origin of most of his inefficiencies on offense.

He might be a bust. Still a good player overall but the generational talent isn't there. He's just a guy that is tall and has some good abilities

[–] Clemsontigger16@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Lol clown take

[–] fluffyjdawg@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Killian Hayes would be the best point guard on the Spurs by a mile, cut him some slack lol. He’ll be fine once he bulks up a bit and the Spurs get some players who can actually pass.

[–] KawhiDidNothingWrong@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Terrible take

Watch the games

[–] LoWE11053211@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (10 children)

he got pushed out of the paint

His center of gravity is way too high

And Sochan or other starters do not handle the entry pass well, to say the least

[–] MoreFeeYouS@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

he is also very light. We are talking about ginobili weight, minus the strength

[–] ruinatex@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

While i do think this is true, i think Victor, very similarly to Embiid in the past, likes playing in the perimeter more and taking those jumpers, which compounds the problem even more. Even in France, where he was the MVP of the whole league and averaged 22 and 10, he was constantly in the perimeter and a third of his shots were 3s, that's just how he likes to play.

The physical limitations are there and the PG play is abysmal, but there needs to be a slight shift in his mentality aswell, he is going way too much into the weakest area of his game out of preference, something that really hurts his efficiency.

[–] gedbybee@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They’re trying to make him durant. Which is fine. But he’s just not there yet. He’ll get there eventually tho.

They also don’t find him in good positions for that as well.

Just overall bad offense.

Last game they set him up like dirk and he hit turnaround jumpers over the defender like they weren’t even there.

We only ran that play twice. It was criminal. But we are trying to lose so there’s that

[–] Outrageouas_V1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He’s probably never had to learn a post game esp against players bigger (stronger) than him.

[–] WholeDescrt@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He losses his advantageous post positioning before the other Spurs players can get him the ball. When they do pass, they are usually not in ideal locations, so he has to reach out to get them and losses his position in the process.

[–] Suggestitt@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

because he’s skinny as shit lol. i feel like people are expecting him to be an ad type player, but his best comp at least offensively is facebook marketplace kd

[–] UnableRat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He doesn't need to back down ppl like Shaq to get looks at the basket, just an actual point guard. He's still incredibly nimble and 7 inches taller than most big men that guard him

he is enamored of playing like a wing, which to me is the origin of most of his inefficiencies on offense.

It may be inefficient now, but this is why his ceiling is an all time HOFer. A guy that size with wing skills is unheard of outside of like KD who is much shorter.

[–] Eilonwy94@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He does not have wing skills lol. He has a decent handle which is impressive given his height but that doesn’t mean he has wing skills

[–] Brystvorter@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wembys free throw percentage is high, I think he can be efficient if he takes better shots and has a better team around him. Right now I think they should just keep letting him chuck.

Yeah he's weak af

[–] ajteitel@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Post ups/finishing are less about pure height, but being able to body through sheer force and/or slither through traffic with athleticism. Shaq and Barkley respectively being the easy examples. Sticking your hands up and just flipping it in is a bit harder since you're stuck in whatever position you are standing + requiring a good passer to get you there in the first place. Basically a weird sky hook. That will take some time to develop against NBA talent

[–] AutographedSnorkel@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's finally happening. Pop is ruining somebody's career right before our eyes. We'll find out how much flex Wemby really has if he can get Pop fired

[–] Extreme-Transport@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Y’all are so annoying

[–] fallenfromglory@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He weighs 12 pounds. I don't care if he's 7 feet tall. He's too little.

[–] BlueHundred@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

He doesn't roll much in screening options and the Spurs roster also aren't great at passing. He should be catching multiple lobs every game.

He is also weak, so he struggles getting good position in the post. His handle is great for his size but not great enough where he can't just put it on the floor and attack the rim every time.

He's more of a hybrid than a traditional big. I thought we all knew this by watching him? But, idk maybe we don't watch him.

[–] Mr_MCawesomesauce@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

This is unironically why KD sandbagged his height and insisted on being listed as a sf his whole career. List a big number for height and the fucking mouth breathers come out of the woodwork like “WHY BIG GUY NO DUNK MORE???? IF GUY TALL WHY NOT STRONG AND DUNK BALL EVERY PLAY????”

[–] sus_menik@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

KD was a phenomenal outside scorer in college though. Wemby has been terrible at every level he played at.

I’ve seen him open for so many lobs and pocket passes that he wasn’t hit on. I’ve seen him get good seals in the paint and not get the ball in lieu of a Malachi Branham 3. It’s a playmaking issue.

[–] Idefydefiance@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

ahh the state of this sub and the hard-on for wemby pre regular season.

[–] Awanderingleaf@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He is trying to play like a 7'3" guard when he can't shoot the way a guard needs to. Unless you're KD, no 7 footers should be trying to play like a guard.

[–] Recent-Curve7616@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Spurs are very hard to watch. A new coach would really do them some good too

[–] behlat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Pop is playing the long game, he doesnt care about anyone's feeling. he's on the experimental stage of roster construction around Wemby

[–] Kirk_likes_this@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Serious question: when was the last time we saw any indication Popovitch was still coaching at a top tier level? The team's just been on an overall downhill trajectory for years and everyone blamed the roster or assumed they were tanking but now they got their guy and....they still suck.

They got a supposedly generational talent with the #1 overall pick and they're still dead last in the West. PG or no PG, shouldn't they be, like slightly better off then they were last year?

Does pop know how to coach him?

Honest question. Is Pop’s stubbornness detrimental to Wembys development?

[–] Bonesawisready5@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah he’s playing more close to the basket since players only meeting, making improvements. Losing streak will end at some point, he is putting it together. Just needs a real PG

[–] Kind_Bullfrog_4073@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The anti-Ben Simmons?

[–] Navsies@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

What do you think about his stat?

I’d think a lot more about it if you provided some context on how low it is.

[–] UTRAnoPunchline@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

And still averaging 20 ppg.

The dude hasn’t even scratched the surface

[–] GrayBox1313@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He’s probably never had to learn a post game esp against players bigger (stronger) than him.

[–] bmanley620@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Part of it is because he likes pulling up from 30 feet

[–] UnlimitedManny@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wemby be like:

Floaters? Scoops? Layups over <6’10” punks? Non!

Fadeaway jumpers and 3’s?? JE T’AIME! 🗣️

[–] GunnerRocket@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Some players embrace contact and some don't. Wemby currently does not. If I had to guess, I'd say Pop is a lot less enthused about Wemby than he'd like to be.

[–] sus_menik@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He was phenomenal inside in France last year as well, but was atrocious anywhere outside the paint.

I have no idea why people are trying to make him into something he is not, instead of focusing on his strengths.

[–] Full-Campaign-7730@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

bricktor wembustyama

[–] Purple-List1577@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

At least give Sam Vecenie credit

So far, Wembanyama has struggled when asked to perform those difficult tasks. He’s only attempted 40 shots at the rim in half-court situations over his first 14 games, a remarkably low number for a player who is 7-foot-4.

Literally copied the paragraph almost word for word

[–] dumbmatter@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Same story in France, his efficiency numbers were not great compared to other top European prospects, in large part because he took a lot of 3s while shooting them poorly. And while his FT% was good, he hardly got to the line at all. His NBA stats are looking similar.

Although given how much better the NBA is than the French league, it probably does bode well for his trajectory if he's able to put up the same numbers in the NBA as a rookie that he did in France last year.

Spurs fans think shots at the rim will get him injured and it’s better for him to play like Kevin Durant until he’s bigger. I just don’t see it. Just teaching him how to be a worst version of himself on the court.

I would be amazed if he turned out significantly better the Porzingas. He's a slightly taller, slightly more athletic version of him, nothing about him says generational talent to me but I've been wrong many many many times before

[–] theboyqueen@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He's playing like he thinks he's Jamal Crawford. Doesn't seem like the best way to leverage his unique advantages, but what do I know?

Chet being a deadeye shooter and Vic being a lousy one is a very underrated part of the comparison between these two.

[–] spicyfartz4yaman@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

All of this looks a lot different and a lot better when the spurs field a roster that is looking to compete for a playoff spot.
