51-year-old posting here. Long time reader, first time post. I would like to learn to surf before I die. I got back issues, but rock climbing and hiking helps tremendously, so I think surfing would also be great?

January and February is learning to Surf in either Nicaragua or Panama.

I am specifically thinking about.

Playa Venao, Panama – Good if I improve quickly.

Popoyo, Nicaragua -Love the idea of a Beginners Bay.

Nicaragua is obviously cheaper but tougher to navigate.

Panama, more expensive, but thin country. Plus, my grandfather and dad spent some time, so I have always wanted to go.

I would like to spend around 2 to 3K per month, US Dollars, but can spend more if needed.

I would need a decent internet connection.

Any suggestions or advice?

Choose Panama!

A former resident of Nicaragua told me she saw a shark jump out of water onto dry land and grab someone's dog before going back underwater and eating it.

Like a native Spanish speaker I would suggest Panamá.

I think Costa Rica could be nice, think about it, same área.

Do you like Tampa? Because Panama City is like Tampa, there are obviously good and bad aspects to this given that you will be in a Latin American country.

I’ve not been to Playa Venao, I checked out some photos of it. The beach is far nicer than Panama City, as Panama City is full of exposed rocks and coral… but it still doesn’t look like a “nice” beach.

Most Americans learn to surf in Costa Rica.
