Arteta is right, IMO.
Lionel Messi has won everything on club and national level. He has had a legendary career with a statistical output in terms of goals and assists that currently say 821 goals and 361 assists in 1047 appearances. That’s more goals and assists than any other player.
As a comparison to his by many perceived rival, Cristiano Ronaldo have more total goals (867), so you could argue Cristiano is a better goalscorer if you simply care about totality. But Ronaldo has played 150 (!) more matches than Messi though. And even with 150 more matches than Messi, the Argentine has 114 more assists. As written before Messi has 361 assists while Ronaldo has 247.
My opinion: Messi is the most complete of the two as he is a better goalscorer in terms of efficiency.
As a side note if you let him play 150 more matches and end up with the same amount played as Ronaldo Messi would have more total goals also. But I don’t think one should discredit Ronaldo’s longevity. I just feel like Messi would surpass his total amount of goals with 150 more matches.
But as things stand, Messi has both a better goal/match ratio and a better assist/goal ratio.
But IMO Messi is more complete and is greater than Ronaldo because he has more total goals and assists (1182 goals and assists) compared to Ronaldo’s total amount (1114 goals and assists). And he has a better total in 150 less matches! That’s absurd from Lionel Messi.
I would argue Messi is more of an impactful player than influential.
You can copy Cruyff's philosophies and find moderate success, but it's near impossible to just copy Messi's playstyle.
Cruyff, Pele, Neuer, Yashin are all wayyy more infuential than Messi. Messi's biggest influence was the short period of the false 9 in world football, apart from that, he really didnt change the way the game is played.
Arteta evidently disagrees.

It's a broken record and a massive circlejerk, but I just can't help myself.
Messi is by far the greatest ever. Not just because of his record breaking amount of goals and assists. Also not just because of his overall longevity. Neither do all of his record amount of trophies matter.
It mostly comes down to what he's showcased on the pitch during his long prime.
Prime Messi:
A mix of the best ball control, passing, dribbling, vision, agility, feints, positioning, balance, his acceleration, pressing and tracking back were also great during his prime.
Even if he didn't score a goal or assist, there would still be a lot of greatness to witness on the pitch. He would still be my favorite player ever if he didn't have a lot of goals and assists and was mostly known for outdribbling entire defenses. There's literally nobody that's done it like prime Messi.
Here's also the most important aspect about prime Messi: he didn't just do these things every now and then. It happened constantly, consistently in every single match, multiple times in those matches. Most top players maybe have an incredible pass every other match, once per match. Or they would have an incredible dribble once in their careers. While Messi did it non-stop.
If only there was another Argentine #10 that played a similar style 35 years ago. Hmmm, nobody coming to mind.
Ronaldo (Brazilian) was a more influential player. His play style changed the way 9s play and you can see it in most of the top guys now.

And if you are talking about influence, not one player in the world of football has been more influential than Johan Cruyff. Teams are still playing in ways based on his ideas.

That's ridiculous, I'm not a Ronaldo fanboy by any means but he and Messi are equally influential. Just because a bunch of countries in South America are obsessed with him doesn't deny all of Asia being obsessed with Ronaldo.

Absolutely false. Messi being the greatest is very reasonable, he is for me. But the most influential is by far Pelé for how he globalized and pioneered the game, or Cruyff if you want to look at tactics and managing.
Now that's just plain bullshit. Pele for example revolutionized football far more than Messi. So did Cruyff. It's impossible to measure how different football would be today if not for those two players, can you really say the same about Messi?
That is not to mean Messi wasn't more successful than those two, he was definitely more successful than Cruyff, Pelé is debatable. But he was definitely not more influential.
There was a period in the mid 2000s where short technical players were going out of fashion in place of taller stronger faster players. A lot of the top managers were defensively minded. The Barca team with Messi as their best player came along and changed how people perceived the future of the game. The game is more entertaining now, top teams go out to score go
And yet Ronaldo does it better
