I wonder how this will affect dropout, whose streaming platform is ran by vimeo
Enshittification
What is enshittification?
The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source
The lifecycle of Big Internet
We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.
Embrace, extend and extinguish
We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.
Sam Reich and Dave Wiskus seem to have a good relationship. Hopefully they can help each other out.
What is Bending Spoons?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bending_Spoons - Tech Holding company
Wow they really do just buy companies to lay off everyone.
every kingdom needs an executioner.
Borderline scam company.
A tech chop shop, they buy tech companies, lay off most of the staff and then hike the price as much as they possibly can.
I've a friend who uses Vimeo as a host for imbed videos for her company. I won't be warning her because she's "all in on AI" and I don't think she'll listen to me on anyone enshittification related.
Does PeerTube have a membership/account access mechanism?
If not, I can't see how creators who monetize their content would be able to move in.
I think they would have to do external funding. I think peertube just solves bandwidth without building datacenters like YouTube. But also I’m not too verse with internet stuff.
