Ya, I suppose the mainspring could be rapidly releasing tension. I suggest taking it to a watch repair shop and have them look at it.

The main spring is inside a little barrel. The outside end of the spring is only “stuck” to the outside of this barrel with some “viscous oil” (so if you over wind it can slip and not break).
Sounds like this oil has “gone”. And allows the spring to unravel.
A service would fix this.
