Hello all,

I have my eye on the AMG edition of the IWC Pilot 41 as a 40th birthday gift to myself. It will be my first 'luxury' watch purchase and I'd love some tips on how to get the best price.

The retail price from IWC is $8350, plus an estimated $550 in taxes. A visit to an authorised dealer in Florida yesterday yielded a quote of $7515 and an offer to 'absorb' the taxes for me.

This is obviously quite a difference, and it got me wondering how the pricing actually works, and how much more room there is to move on something like this?

I'd obviously like to get the best price for myself, and it would be nice if a smaller jeweller/dealer could make some money on it too instead of giving it all to IWC.

Any advice/knowledge is appreciated! Thank you!

Only authorized dealers will get the lowest wholesale prices so you can't expect the same sort of flexibility on a new condition watch from an unauthorized dealer. My gut tells me that if the dealer offered you a quote that much lower unprompted, it's probably worth getting a quote from another authorized dealer just to get something of an idea of variation and if it's very different let them both know that you are shopping around for the best price.
