The procurement department has stated that Boeing's off-the-shelf reconnaissance plane is the only one available that meets Royal Canadian Air Force requirements.

Bombardier has argued that its alternative β€” currently a prototype β€” would offer a cheaper and more high-tech aircraft that’s made in Canada.

Aye, and if my mother had wheels, she'd be a wagon.

Gee and if Avro just weren't bankrupted it could make a plane that beats anything on the market.

Avro planes were always middling at best.

Buying P-8s makes a lot of sense - they're already operated by many other countries and are new enough to have a long life ahead of them but have been around enough to be a proven platform.

Yes, but could is the operative word here. :P

The P-8 definitely seems capable for the job, to me it seems to be pretty much a 737 with all but a few windows removed, and a couple "bells and missiles" added.

Pretty much. I'm not a big fan of Boeing, especially after ruining McDonnell-Douglas, but the P-8 seems like a genuinely good plane, and other operators seem happy with it. Plus I can't imagine how much of a shitshow it would have been if we'd given this to Bombardier (C-series, anyone?)

Ruining McDonnell??? My guy, it's the other way around hahaha.

As one former exec lamented, "McDonnell bought Boeing with Boeing's own money" back in the late 90s.

Profit over quality was exactly why shitbox McDonnell couldn't keep their own lights on.

On the civilian side, yeah - but I thought we were talking military here.

Lessons learned: mergers reduce quality at both ends.

I can't be the only one who believes the military stuff would have also improved with a mix of quality engineers and quality management right?
