I'll try to make it short.

I'm thinking about moving my PfSense router from a VM on my server to a dedicated OPNsense machine and I am looking at those seemingly sweet R86S.

I was wondering if the R86S' N5105 would be able to handle 10Gbps with a relatively simple config (no suricata and deep packet inspection for the foreseeable future but some inter VLAN routing and a VPN).

Another option would be to use a SFF computer with an i7-4790 and add a 10Gb NIC (electricity is cheap here but I'd rather not have another i7 powered space heater during the next heat waves).

I'm open to suggestions if neither would work but I'm trying to keep everything under 300$.

Thanks y'all!

You didn't mention how many 10G ports but from what I have researched N5105 will struggle if you have multiple ports.

Lenovo Tiny M920q + PCIe riser + 10GbE NIC can be found under 300 depending on your location.

I've been running an m720q with a dual connectx-3 and no extra cooling just fine for a year now. These tiny PCs are awesome

I wish I would’ve known about these before I went with my dell 3080s to save on space.

Either way glad I can run connectx-4’s 😎

R86S has the N100/N305 version which is a lot faster.
