A bit of background. I graduated this year with BS in Computer Science. I had a job as an MLOps/Cloud engineer, but unfortunately I got laid off. My ambition as of now is to work as an MLE or a Data Scientist (not necessarily a researcher, although that'd be dope). My question is, which would be more useful in that regard, an MS in CS or Stats? I've heard doing ML/DS specific programs can be "cash cows" and a bit shallow, so I'd rather do something more fundamental and give me more options. I'd appreciate any input you guys have! Thanks in advance.

Do CS. It seems like you're looking to do more coding than analysis/forecasting.

I think it will be more useful if you focus on statistics. You can focus on statistics while getting an MS in CS. CS is more aligned with MLE or even Data Science. But you can do it the other way around, as these two fields often get overlap.

I’d go for the statistics course. You can get recognised CS qualifications by getting certifications from the cloud companies (AWS and Azure), but it’s hard to come by recognised math qualifications outside of university. So do the Masters in Stats, and you can always study CS on your own later.
