To be honest, I'm not surprised at all. This game and studio are stuff of legends.

The fact that this is probably a fairly non-controversial pick in a year that arguably had a bumper crop of great games really underscores just what an amazing game this is.

Truly, trying to decide between BG3 and Alan Wake 2 when voting for GOTY was like trying to pick a favorite parent, or child. Both so good, and huge achievements in unique ways. Stacked year for awards, that's for sure!
