In the original Sherlock Holmes stories Watson just came back from the War in Afghanistan. That was in 1887 and Doyle was referencing what was already the second Anglo-Afghan war.

Replace Middle East with South America and it's the same.

The USA is not a force for good on this planet.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, not yet. But it COULD be. It could've been that, so many fucking times. The United States could do some insanely useful shit for the world. Has the money and the population to do so much. Instead, we put it all towards bombing civilians in Gaza and subsidizing billionaires. The frustrating part is that once in a while, things have looked like they'll get better. After the end of WW2, it could've done so much. But it didn't. And it hasn't. And the way that things are looking, it won't anytime soon.

I am well aware of the Marshall Plan, but I wasn't referring to that. I meant that they could've actually worked on gender and racial equality in the country itself. Instead, they had a Red Scare and kept all of the inequality. Nixon and Reagan didn't just appear from nowhere. Not to mention the Vietnam or Korean Wars.

same people who got Nixon/Reagan elected wrote p2025...

Yup. That is true.

I've heard worrisome speculation about the white house working up to invading Venezuela. Supposedly officials are talking to oil industry executives about investment opportunities after a regime charge, and those conversations sound a lot like conversations that took place before the Iraq invasion.

Edit: Oh damn, the situation has escalated more than I realized https://unac.notowar.net/no-war-on-venezuela-all-out-for-a-week-of-emergency-protests/

Look on the page for all the crap the US has pulled. Iraq is but one of many . And Venezuela too.

I disagree. 100%. I am a force for good on this planet. I am USA. Sorry if you live here and suck.

If you live in thd USA and also say "The USA is not a force for good on this planet." 99.9% chance you are too unmotivated to even volunteer to help anyone besides yourself.

I spend too much time working through various means to do what I can for thd less fortunate -thd homeless- in my area. I dont exactly expect "the USA" to be a force for good always, its the people that

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 1 points 17 hours ago

One person isn't USA just like one person isn't humanity. What people do alone and what people do in groups are very different things. There a millions of people who do acts of good sometimes, but as a whole, humanity is crap. We pollute, we rape, kill, torture, maim, rob, steal, embezzle, blackmail, waste, destroy, and so much more.

USA: .... the middle east has been shot by someone, we don't know who, so we need to protect them with democracy.

(shoots middle east again)

(World watches everything and says nothing because they're afraid that USA will shoot them too)

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Transcription"Why would they do this" meme.

First frame shows man labelled "USA" shooting man labelled "Middle East". Caption reads "[gunshots]". USA is standing, while Middle East sits in a lounge chair.

Second frame, USA turns to camera, appearing shocked.

Third frame repeats the first frame, identically.

This generation has no commentary. It has no reference point. Why? Maybe the generation before (my gen) was so dissolutioned by the baby boomers(my parents) that so many never really ever understood their place in society. Or believed destructive concepts. We already had Sodom and Gomorra. We know how it ends when men cant stop having sex with anything warm.

Middle East -- bang.

Middle East -- bang.

Its commentary on the moral decline of societies around the world
