Traditional handles reduce range. Though I expect to see some evolution of door handle design in the coming years.
Do aerodynamics work differently on EVs?
Or is the real world impact on gas/battery range neglible, and it's mostly about making them seem more high-tech and futuristic?
The impact of handle shape is negligible next to tire size (the 19" and 20" tires many EVs have reduce range) or lack of rear wheel cowlings. I read an article about it recently related to people dying in Teslas + EU legislation, but can't remember the source.
Also, from the article:

The really odd thing is, Tesla for example could have made their handles mechanical without changing the external design, but they didn't.
I think for marketing purposes whatever % more range is more important than the same % more fuel effectiveness in a combustion vehicle.
That said, the only electric car I've driven has real handles.
I can only go off of the information that makes it to us, but apparently yes. Even Formula E are designed with different aerodynamics to Formula 1.
Poor example. Those are two different series.
Aero and tire drag are free ways to gain EV range.
But why the fuck does anyone need 700km of range for daily commute.
It's possible to have inset mechanical handles too (they exist on some older cara), but mechanical stuff is more time consuming to design
Cars are still way over priced. Consumers need a $10k electric car with ~200 mile range. Until that happens the market isn't replacing gas vehicles fast enough.
I agree on the principle but this is a pretty big step forward in terms of value for $.
Exactly. I can get a high mpg gas used gas vehicle for under $10k. No electric car is competing with that. The tech is getting there, and the first car company to bring it to market will be the #1 at company for 100 years.
This will NEVER be allowed in the US, it would destroy the domestic producers and make consumers too happy.
And reduce the air pollution. can't have that.
Where is the 50hp ecconomy model? I miss my a old GEO metro. All the power I needed - and cheap in all ways.

People stopped buying them when gas got cheap.
Gas was cheap when they were sold new. I recall paying less than $1/gallon when they were on the market, and a quick cheap shows prices were around $1/gallon for most of their life. Prices did go towards the end, but gas was pretty cheap when they were sold. Well at least in the US, Europe always had high gas taxes.
It will probably be much more expensive and less powerful, but may I bring to your attention that this gorgeous car will be available next year?

Still a concept, but it seems pretty certain it's going to go into production, as there's a convertible version as well.

the downvoters don't understand: if people can't open a door because there's no exposed physical handle, you're fucked. first responders and helpful people can't save you if your shitbox requires a giant circular saw to open.

All cars sold in the last 20 years have auto locks. Whether there is a physical handle or not is pointless.
