I once argued this with my teacher in Uni.
"Do I have to find a quote of someone saying it if I say the sky is blue? Do I have to reference my parents when I put my name at the top of the page?"
Unsurprisingly, he said I was being obtuse.

I think he cited the wrong source. Technically William Shakespeare was plagiarizing that from someone before him
