Partisans used to put ieds on delays in the middle of roads, usually hidden in cowpats. Why delays? that way they would be triggered by the first vehicle - usually security - but the second car - usually full of the nazi brass - would be the ones that copped the blast.

Wait. Are these motorcades just staged and ready in every country they might visit? Or do they fly the vehicles ahead of them?
They are flown ahead of the visit. I'm sure there are multiple fleets and perhaps a few doted around the country for frequent visits at NY, camp David or maralargo. But for other countries it's a fly in and fly out.

That’s probably some Secret Service thing, because the threat of poisoning is actually real. In America, the Secret Service goes to great lengths to vet potential restaurant stops wherever the POTUS/VP is going to be. But they don’t exactly have jurisdiction to do that when they’re in another country.
Notably, Trump’s love of fast food has made the Secret Service’s job extremely frustrating… He apparently has a tendency to just spontaneously demand a drive-thru stop, giving the Secret Service no time to actually run security checks on the staff ahead of time.
Yeah but that means those fast food places don't have a chance to prep the poison, either🧠ðŸ§

Neo has a really good video on the presidential motorcade and how it works. It is completely absurd in a place like Milan, certainly, but every part of it is there for a reason.
One size doesn’t fit all.
Moreover, the president is getting the treatment of a king. They are ostensibly fungible assets. There’s a succession plan. The more they’re protected, the more they’re a target (and invading foreign countries doesn’t help).
