Oh, so that's why when I use the snipping tool and paste it, it's a png instead of another format that could take up less space.

Png is the right choice as it is lossless. Jpg works well for photos but it's not designed for abstract depictions such as the lines, panes and texts in applications and web sites. Meaning artifacts become noticeable with smaller jpg file sizes.

Maybe. Would be nice to have multiple options at least.

This makes me curious, if in case of vector graphics (SVG), they kind of don't need a separate mime type... They could just put that in the text/html slot, because you can inject SVG into html...
