I'm loving all the replies pointing out their clown makeup.

Why did they make a public post about this? Surely they would just send notices to the relevant parties?

[–] neshura@bookwormstory.social 34 points 1 year ago

they smoked their own supply is how. The management team ate the legal departments bs about how they are fighting a righteous cause here.

Nope they are only using API's from the various hosting sources. That's what makes this request so blatantly fraudulent. For all intents and purposes Tachiyomi is just a Browser specialized for Manga

[–] MomoTimeToDie@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But don't worry, the tachi devs genuinely consider the mass bs dmca spam from kakao to be entirely good faith and legitimate

[–] besbin@lemmy.ml -4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, it's better to be worried when official copyright holders are going after you and not a bunch of troll bots. Bullying using the legal process and fee is a common tactic. It's better to legal up and be ready to fight in court than ignore their attacks and get raided by the Fed.

[–] MomoTimeToDie@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 year ago

Kakao has nothing even resembling a legitimate claim. They aren't even fucking American. Tachi should just tell them to shove it straight up their gook asses

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

But unofficially because we would circumvent the ads of websites.
I believe we actually scrape the pages because Tavhi even mentions to open in webview so we have the session cookies...

[–] Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No but it does give users one click access to the illegal sources, which could be a problem in some legal jurisdictions.

Personally I just use it to read from my personal komga server, but it would be sad to see the app get attacked.

You need to set up quite a few things first. It's like suing an app store cause you can install a browser and pin a piracy website to your home menu, giving you one click access to illegal sources.

[–] Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago

The app came with a fairly large extension list pre-populated so it's a little different to a browser. Although a browser with all the piracy links already bookmarked would be rad.

Either way, you can still point the app towards any other repository so it doesn't really hurt for them to remove the default extensions repository to avoid potential legal problems.

It's like they're speaking a language I don't know

BRB, let me go create another fork.

[–] Ozy@lemmy.world 39 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Actually insane the extens these fucking idiots go to. Not only do they provide sub-par services, they also ask high amounts of money in return.

What if I didn't know English, are they going to translate X manhwa in my native language like the groups do? No? Well boo hoo they are actively hurting the popularity of artists instead of helping them.

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 12 points 1 year ago

They even threatened manhwa readers

[–] ardi60@reddthat.com 39 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Saikou already DMCAd last year and Dantotsu is reborn. Now, tachiyomi is next target. it will be like whack a mole game.

[–] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 8 points 1 year ago

Is there anything left of Saikou? I've been keeping it on Obtainium waiting for a potential rebirth

(Btw, tangentially related, anyone knows if there is any fork named "Saikope"? I've had that app installed for a long time and I don't even remember where I got it anymore)

[–] 0range0281@lemmy.dbzer0.com 35 points 1 year ago

They literally said straight up that tachiyomi was a virus in their past post. Cant make this shit up

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 21 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Fuck kakao 🖕

[–] Throbbing_Banjo@midwest.social 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Anyone have any context here? No idea what I'm looking at

[–] neshura@bookwormstory.social 45 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Kakao nuked the official Tachiyomi Extension repo because they "infringe on their copyright".

The Extension repo does not and never has offered copyrighted material, it merely facilitated access to sites that do within Tachiyomi. Essentially it was a collection of hyper specific Browsers. The repo is gone, the extensions are not (they are now in a different repo provided by a user). Tachiyomi itself allows for 3rd party repos now and everyone is mad at Kakao for making the App less usable.

[–] JustARaccoon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

A bit longer than that. Kakao went after tachiyomi for a number of extensions, the biggest ones being mangadex and bato.to. the Tachiyomi team took the plugins down without fighting back. A day later they announced they're taking down the plugin repo effective immediately, likely out of fear of future action but it also could've been discussed behind closed doors with the Kakao team - we don't know. Now Kakao is trying to sue the entire app, all of its developers and anyone who's forked it on GitHub for infringing copyright.

[–] Deceptichum@kbin.social 34 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Korean company went after a manga reader type app with some sketch DCMA claims. Now they’ve saying they’re going to pursue legal action against 100 forks of the app.

Corpos being fuckwits and going after open source software that can be used to pirate manga/manwha/etc

[–] Daxtron2@startrek.website 20 points 1 year ago

Great so now I'm gonna get sued because I forked tachiyomi? Fuck off

[–] ReluctantZen@feddit.nl 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tapas sucks. If you want me to buy your stuff, please at least actually sell it to me on Kindle or Kobo instead of making me use a shitty coin system

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 17 points 1 year ago

Not only Tapas, it's like every manhwa publisher

from r/manhwa

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 year ago

Bunch o' fuckwits trying to make themselves sound like damned war heroes

[–] yamanii@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Already did the repo thing for tachiyomi, but what about anyiomi?

Seriously, Kakao is very, very nasty company that should be destroyed on this planet. If you live in Korea, you are basically forced to used their product and they suck, riddled with Ads because they're de facto standard for chat, taxi, etc. I hate having to use their product.

[–] CJOtheReal@ani.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don't you have a Cartel office? Thats a illigal monopoly

We have one but they don't do anything :(

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They're notorious for overworking their artists. and authors. One of them is Solo Levelling artist died from brain hemorrhage in 2022 and he was working under Kakao.

[–] SnipingNinja@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

WTF, didn't know this. This is horrible

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/2023/01/718_334310.html

And I heard of another author who had a miscarriage because her editor didn't give her a break.

[–] meiko60@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think it will be easy because tachiyomi is open source

[–] CJOtheReal@ani.social 1 points 1 year ago

Hey, sdf federation works again... For now...

[–] conciselyverbose@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nintendo can't get emulators that actually are for the primary purpose of bypassing their restrictions (even if doing so on legitimately purchased games is perfectly legal) shut down, and this company thinks they can close a fucking reader because it's possible some people might use it with pirated copies of their IP?🤣

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They can and they will because the dev team caved.

In regards to the forks though. We'll see if they get a computer literate judge or not.

[–] conciselyverbose@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Harassing specific devs may mean those devs don't push back, but being open source means anyone else hosting it can trivially counter claim bullshit DMCA nonsense.

It doesn't take any tech literacy. There's no infringement and precedent out the ass that things far closer to the line are legal. There's no need for a novel interpretation of anything. The project doesn't contain their IP.
