From the director of Weapons

Alright, you've gotten my attention. I still don't have very high hopes for this considering every horror game adaptation ends up being ass, but this does look interesting.

It doesn't feel that connected to the games though. Does this take place in Raccoon City?

IIRC when it was announced, he said it's a unique story with new characters in Racoon City as it falls apart.

I think it's smart to deviate from the games entirely, and just use the RE universe. Won't have to worry about doing justice to a game -> film adaptation.

From the abandoned house and lone "just a dude" protagonist it looks similar to RE7. Maybe they want to go into a similar direction.

Weapons was pretty good until the reveal. It fell very flat after that.

Plus side , the bar is on the ground for good movies.

I'm a bit optimistic as this time it doesn't look like they're just churning out another RE movie to continue to keep the IP of the franchise, and it's actually being treated as a "mainstream" production with a well-known director among other things. It doesn't feel like a cheap B-movie like every other RE film in the past.

I liked the old RE movies, sometimes cheesy is good fun :-)

Okay, yeah, that got me interested. I haven't been much into the RE movies since the first one (except for the occasional 'so bad it's good' one) so it's nice to see this take. I did do more than one 'wtf' face while watching the trailer, so I'm hopeful.

If anyone hasn't seen any of Creggars other 2 movies, Barbarian and Weapons, I cannot recommend them enough. They are very unique and very fun horror movies that don't get bogged down in typical cookie cutter horror plot points.

The main character in this movie played a drug addict in Weapons and did a fantastic job.

They even have a decent bit of humor, which makes since he was a memeber of Whitest Kids You Know.

If this is a story that deviates from the games or takes place during the period of one or two of them...man that's a risky move. And releasing a trailer that doesn't have any recognizable elements from ANY of the games? again, risky.

I'm going to take a wait and see approach on this one until well after its release.

At this point, it seems to me the most consistent thing about the Resident Evil franchise is it's willingness to reinvent itself. Even before the seismic shift from traditional survival-horror to B-movie action that RE4 represented, the 2002 REmake was intentionally mucking around with the original game's flow and mechanics in the name of keeping things fresh, even for returning players.

You say there are no recognizable elements from any of the games, but I see a creepy, deserted house in the middle of nowhere which someone enters after encountering troubles outside. At some point, the intruder discovers the house is not as deserted as it appears, as there is a monster or monsters within. That, to me, is all that's strictly necessary. Admittedly, I wouldn't mind seeing a few iconic RE monsters make an appearance (especially ones which have not been featured in other adaptations, like hunters, or a drain deimos), but if they provide me something new, I'll be even happier.
