Please try to avoid using the term 'sideloading'. This refers to ADB sideloading and the thing Google is trying to attack is the freedom to install apps.
The delivery of my Jolla phone is also getting closer. Get fucked, google.
Agreed. I already run Lineage OS without Google Play services, but the worse Android gets, the more I want to use Post Market OS.
I haven't had a phone with Google Play services on it since 2019, and finally deleted my Google account in 2023, and I will not allow Google to dictate what I can and cannot do on my phone.
Currently, since I use AOSP, they can't do it. But, if they do include something in AOSP to force, then I will have to go to a Linux phone.
I'm just waiting for GrapheneOS phone. I hope Motorola understands what an opportunity they have.
They completely understand their opportunity and plan to go all out on GOS, initially only their flagship models will support GOS but soon even their budget phones will support GOS.
I do appreciate what GrapheneOS is doing for android right now (I'm actually running it right now), but I just don't see Android in general having a great future as long as Google is involved, as they keep removing more parts of the OS and moving them to play services.
Personally I just think there's not so many transition options. As far as I know Sailfish isn't completely open source either.
Was doing some research on that and appears it's not available in the US, sad day
I believe they've mentioned on their forum that it would theoretically work with US carriers, so if you can get one shipped over there it should work.
I'm not 100% sure though, check with them first if you actually want to order one. The forum is a better place to ask/search than their customer service, as they have a huge backlog right now.
I'm a bit lost with all the recent developments, but in the end, does this mean that installing from, say, F-droid or similars won't be possible at all?
Sorry for the stupid question; it's getting harder to keep up with all the bad developments in the world.
From the last time I delved into the news it sounded like third party devs could still get signing keys as long as they verify their identity.
I think alphabet is trying to kill ad avoidance tools. That's my best guess on the economic motive here. If blocking ads is against their ToS or terms of use, and you can't publish ad bypassing tools, suddenly Google can guarantee their walled garden has more ads than piracy websites or porn sites...
Iβd rather not use a website than sit through ads.
Yeah, me too here. No website is important enough to need to endure ads for.
I'm the same way. I use morphe for YouTube and YouTube music. Ublock origin on Firefox for web browsing. Ads are an actual vuln for your devices too since Google will happily take your money to distribute malware through ad impressions...
My next personal phone will be a Linux phone. Fuck this noise.
I've pre-ordered the Click Communicator for my next work phone, and I don't plan to use anything on it aside from Microsoft 365's shitty apps that I need for work.
On my personal device, I'm happy to drop all apps on my phone aside from calling, SMS/MMS, and maps/GPS. Everything else I can do with web apps or Linux desktop apps (ebooks with TTS are essential for me), if needed. I'm so tired of Google's (and Microsoft's... and Apple's) bullshit.
I'm glad to hear this won't be deployed globally until 2027; that gives a bit more time for Linux phones to improve. I just need my Pixel 7a to limp along for another ~7 months, then I'm gone forever, I hope!
Fuck what Android has become.
I find the app.s on Linux are often nicer, in many cases; like, I read more ebooks with Foliate than I ever did when I was using Android. It's been really nice; even just the familiarity of things working like you're used to them working on your desktop/laptop makes the whole experience justβ¦nicer.
Fuck this I already run GOS but I don't trust Google, the second Motorola releases their GOS phone I'm trading this one in.
that would not apply to non-google versions of android/OS' based on the android open source project like GrapheneOS or /e/OS though, am i right?
Yes, but you will still see the impact of the shortened market.
Any OS without Google Services.
This is a crime and you are the victim.
I stopped updating my phone since march. Fuck google
