Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

I read one of his scifi novels. It was very bad. But I didnt expect anything differnt tbh.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 22 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I read the first couple TekWar books. The first one isn't that bad. Lots of good ideas but if I remember correctly the second book was just dull and I never finished it. Probably would be a good audiobook, maybe...

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago (1 children)

William Shatner reading any book as Kirk would be +1.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

As who? That's just the real him, on screen lol

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

Sure was, complete with poorly captured footage like in Command and Conquer.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)

It was one of the TekWar books but I have no idea which. I just know it was very badly written.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 4 points 5 days ago

It was amateur but readable so I wouldn't say it was badly written. Someone probably had a hard time being his editor and staying objective

Actors arent inherently writers, its not really surprising or shameful to me.

I love Paul Darrow as Avon, but I've heard some pretty dismal things about the novel he wrote for his character's family. And that's okay, I'm not gonna knock him for trying. Same with Shatner.

Well the kids have to learn about Tek War sooner or later

He had an album, I don’t even remember the type of music. I think it had a lot of spoken word so maybe it was jazz. It was in 90s, I was high.

[–] marsupial9272@quokk.au 14 points 5 days ago

He has a few albums. One from 1969, “The Transformed Man” and “Has Been” from 2009ish. I have both. The latter really is good with an excellent cover of Pulp’s “Common People”. A newer metal album from a few years ago I haven’t heard.

THAT'S IT!!

LOL!!!

Star Trek V and his run of Star Trek novels are the original NuTrek.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Aw I liked V, I think a lot of its issues were caused by the studio. "What does God need with a ship?" is easily the most Captain Kirk line in all of Trekdom.

[–] Apocalypteroid@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Gonna get a lot of flack here but I liked V more than IV. Yeh, I said it. Who's gonna fight me? :D

No need. I'm one of the few who really enjoys Insurrection... when viewed as a 2-parter episode.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I’m with you. Of all the things they could have done after turning our guys into outlaws, they go with a trip to 1980s Earth? I mean, it’s budget friendly, but a bit of a let down…

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago

Yeah it was a drug novel that didn't even make the drug seem cool. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–] AngryishHumanoid@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

I quite enjoyed "The Return". I suspect that was less due to his writing abilities than the 2 other writers...

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 39 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Needs a couple Shatner pauses and pronunciations.

Sure. I used... different words in... differentcombinations to tell... different stories.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

"Shatner or Walken" would be a fiendishly difficult text quiz category 🤔

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There are some original Trek scripts still around on the internet and this is how Kirk's dialogue was written from the very first. I don't see what else he was expected to do with it.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I don't see what else he was expected to do with it.

Idunno, sing? 🤷🏻

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago

She came from Greece. She had a thirst for knowledge.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago

yup, that was how I read this.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

I heard that

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 24 points 5 days ago (1 children)

On Amazon, they have book summaries, previews, and reviews. If you tell an author that you saw they have books on Amazon, and you ask them to go through the trouble of explaining them for you specifically when that information is already easily available on the very site you got that information from, you're like the king of lazy entitled assholes.

If you can't even be bothered to read the information off of Amazon, chances are, you're not a big reader in the first place. There's no point to taking you seriously.

It would probably be better if Shatner had simply ignored this person, but I'm not going to take a person to task when they were just being an asshole to a person who was previously acting like an asshole towards them.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 21 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I see that you've written a number of lengthy Comments. Could you explain the differences between them? Briefly?

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 19 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sure. I used different words in different combinations to respond to different posts or comments.

[–] tipicaldik@lemmy.world 15 points 5 days ago

His wit is as sharp as his karate chop.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 12 points 5 days ago

God, I read that in his 80's voice

Most of his books are collaborations. Most of that stuff is more of a director's role. Some have recounts of stories from him, some he's provided actual material.

He can't survive on acting and good looks on their own.

[–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

In his defense, that really was a very stupid question to ask a writer, because it just says "hey, I haven't read your work. Please be a good bitch and tell me about it, even though I'm just an online rando trying to farm you for attention."

[–] jdr@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

All books are the same on the way out

[–] Alvaro@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 4 days ago

Do you eat them??

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago
[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

No way he writes all of those.

Edit: He also doesn't run his Twitter, from what i've heard.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

TekWar is (the) shit! 😃
