Is it possible to point to a container folder to import from instead of uploading from the interface? I already have all my files in a folder structure on the server i'm running pdfding from.
It seems quite good, would be very nice not to need to upload every file a second time.
It is possible to ingest PDFs via a consume folder. However consuming the files will cause them to be deleted. So I don't think this will be very helpful in your case. There is however a bulk upload feature in the UI, which allows uploading may PDFs at once.
do the files get modified after uploading? some filesystems can deduplicate based on contents, maybe it wouldn't take double space that way.

Im assuming you're unaffiliated with Linkding?
At the beginning the project was heavily inspired by Linkding. If you were to pull an early version of PdfDing you would find that the UI is very similar to Linkding. That was also the reason why I named the project PdfDing. By now the UI is totally different and only the name remains.
Can it change the layout / reflow the text of scientific papers to be single column text? I'm still searching something that makes reading papers on tablets possible.
Have you tried koreader? It's not perfect, but if the screen is large enough it normally works pretty well. I use it on a Kobo reader, but it works on Android as well (not sure about iOS).
Thanks! I think I tried it on my smartphone but like you mentioned, it needs at least some screen real estate. Then I forgot about it.
