!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

MODERATORS

I did try to search for the answer before posting, but I'm not the best at that stuff. Sorry if there's already an answer for this somewhere.

I like to have separate accounts for stuff. I like to have one where I can discuss movies, and then another one where I can talk about video games, music, and basically all my other interests. It feels better to compartmentalize them this way. I didn't want to go ahead with the idea without checking first.

I find the moderation here is not as clumsy / brainless as you'll find on other platforms like Reddit. They don't do things like ban you for having multiple accounts.

How else would we discuss our favorite corvids?

The family of birds that includes crows, ravens, and jays. But mostly a poor reference to some famous reddit drama about a user with multiple accounts.

[–] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago

I've made around 3 because there was always some weird server issue with the other 2

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Simple. I like it.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

i think it is expected what with the instances

Yeah, the whole concept of this place feels pretty Punk or anarchist. I just wanted to ask first and see if my assumption about multiple account was right.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 33 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

The rules may vary from instance to instance but I think it's generally fine. The main thing to avoid is vote manipulation - don't vote on something with more than one account, and don't upvote your own stuff from your other accounts.

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 14 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

You also don't want to use another account for ban evasion. If you've been banned from a community or instance, then don't post there with your other account.

Well, and if you have too many accounts, it can also be annoying to people. For example, there's a user on here called cm0002, who's made it his mission to repost content from lemmy.ml communities to other instances.
Lots of people just think that adds noise and would like to not see his reposts, ergo block him. But he also has a user account on virtually every Lemmy instance, so you have to blocks a ton of accounts...

But yeah, if you're a normal human being, likely neither of these are a problem. 😅

Context :

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitalize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.

Megathread on the issue

Some highlights from the link:

Dessalines, head .ml admin, lead Lemmy dev actively spreading genocide denialism https://sh.itjust.works/post/61371958

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

Under the settings menu you can export your settings as a JSON file.

# Using python, read in a JSON file. Immediately write it
# back out as a new file using indent=2 to "pretty print"
# the output so it's human and computer readable.
# With care this can be edited to add/remove blocks
# and reimported back into lemmy. I've never used
# the import process, so use with care.
import json
infile = <your filename here>
outfile = <where you want it here>
with open(infile, "r") as i:
    data = json.load(i)
with open(outfile, "w") as o:
    json.dump(data, o, indent=2)

What does this mean? I'm not sure how it relates to the comment it was responding to.

[–] historicaldocuments@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

you have to blocks a ton of accounts

Sorry. In my head I had posted a complete thought, but in reality I left out the context. If you've grabbed all of cm0002's accounts on one account, then you can export those account settings, export the settings for the other accounts, and make the blocklists the same for all the accounts, then reimport them. That might not be simpler than just blocking them whenever you see them, but it's workable. You could also manually add to the blocklist if you knew all his accounts/instances.

I wouldn't be shocked if one day there wasn't some third party tool for managing/sharing blocklists.

I have listed all accounts used for the .ml crossposting campaign in the link that's on the bio of every account used for it, or the megathread below:

I checked my blocklist and didn't have any of your accounts blocked. I usually block obvious advertising accounts, or accounts that are en masse reposting reddit stuff (blocking lemmy.durstig.online was the reason I made an account in the first place).

The niche comms/subreddits remains as a problem. It's hard to look at labor-of-love content and realize that some old newsgroup stuff is easier to access than newer reddit posts. At least the people who have the old newsgroups archived arent' constantly changing/filtering so that you see something new every time you look.

I think it’s okay to have more than one account on Lemmy as long as you only have one per instance. Many communities have rules against multiple accounts, but each instance is its own community. They’re just federated. Just don’t use them dishonestly. But that’s up to each user to decide.

I made a second account on another instance, but I haven’t found any use in using that account over this one. I have been banned from a few communities, but not because I broke rules, because a mod saw me in another community and thought I’d be a bad fit for their community. I say a bad thing about generative AI, I’m risking a ban from generative AI communities. I say a good thing about AI, I risk a ban from anti AI communities. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t. So I don’t let others influence what I say. The truth is, I’m neither entirely for nor against the tech. I just think it needs to be regulated and used responsibly. That’s just one example. I don’t believe in ban evasion. But if my other account sees something in a community that banned my first account with zero interaction, that isn’t ban evasion, it’s just normal use of the service. Mods banning people who never interacted with their community are the abnormally behaving ones. But it’s not a big deal. Just a grey area.

[–] mafishfayda@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

If you haven't been banned from the community, this is not a ban evasion, it's avoiding the authoritarianism of an irresponsible mod who dishonestly abuses their power. This is the action I hate most in moderation, and it shows that this mod have no life!

[–] lemmie689@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 11 hours ago

I have three Lemmy accounts. Instances go offline from time to time, I made a third account when both my first and second account imstances went offline at the same time. Not all instances are federated with each other, so my three accounts are all slightly different in what I see.

[–] Dirk@lemmy.ml 16 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Depends on what “on here” is. The Fediverse in general? Yes, absolutely. Use as many accounts as you want for whatever reason. On Lemmy? Also yes. Your use case is absolutely valid.

I don’t know any instance that disallows multiple accounts for the same user. Just don’t create a bunch of sock puppet accounts …

I'm new to this. I'm still learning what all this means, but I figured if I have to put a little more effort to participate on this, then it's probably safer. I don't know exactly what "decentralized" means, but the little I know makes it seem like it's built for the long run, or at least with user safety in mind.

It looks a little tedious, but it seems I can access other instances (I guess they'd be like Discord servers) even if I didn't sign up with them.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I have over 10 accounts, though I only use one at a time. When I get to 1000 - 1500 comments, I abandon it and make a new one. Had to deal with a stalker in the past and I'm never putting my entire comment history under a single username ever again.

[–] MichaeleanDouglasse@thelemmy.club 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

That's a lot of emails to handle. Well, I guess not really, seeing as you discard them. What do you tell the admin when you give a reason to join on a new account? Do you just tell them the truth?

I don't know how to word that in a way that doesn't seem like I'm being sneaky, but I'm just wondering since it seems like it's not really done in bad faith. It kind of feels like multiple accounts is encouraged if one of the purposes for decentralizing is anonymity, in a certain sense. Separate the forum into multiple pieces so the downfall of one part of it doesn't spell doom for the rest. Cut off the infected limb, so to speak.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

What do you tell the admin when you give a reason to join on a new account? Do you just tell them the truth?

Nobody has ever asked about it.

[–] MichaeleanDouglasse@thelemmy.club 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

But it's a necessary answer when creating an account. You know how the admins have to manually approve you?

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

It depends on the instance. On feddit.uk they just want to make sure you're a real person.

Oh, okay, so there isn't one admin group for the entire site?

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You should have more than one fedi account. For sure a mastodon or misskey, maybe a nodebb or bookwyrm, possibly Pixelfed or Vernissage, if you're feeling spicy a wanderer or funkwhale -- cut loose, try out a few services. If you wanna have multiple lemmy accounts, no-one's gonna stop you but a lot of people that do run multiple are kinda lame and end up using them as sock puppets and to manipulate voting and stuff so don't be surprised if folks are skeptical.

I definitely have to look up everything you said in your comment. I'm not trying to "run" accounts. I just want to participate in discussions regarding my hobbies.

[–] neidu4@piefed.social 0 points 8 hours ago

Yes, as indicated by my username. I tend to try out different instances, and this is my 4th (obviously) account.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago

I do that for the same reason you've mentioned.

From the admin side, it makes next to no difference so I don't think an admin won't care. It's only a problem if someone goes voting on the same piece of content from two accounts, or commenting in the same thread to steer a conversation

In your case, if you segment activity into different topics, there's little risk of that happening

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

1 per instance for me is enough.
