The Justice Department moved Friday to allow more people to purchase firearm suppressors — known as silencers — short-barreled rifles and certain other guns without registering them with the federal government following a court ruling that struck down provisions of a key law.

The Trump administration announced the enforcement policy changes after a Texas judge in August ruled the permitting process was unconstitutional. The judge’s ruling was limited to the parties involved in that case, but the Justice Department said Friday it would no longer enforce the registration requirements more broadly.

“The direction from the President, Congress, and the courts is clear,” Rob Cekada, director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said in an emailed statement. “ATF is now following suit with our enforcement posture while continuing to ensure we remain focused where we are needed the most: combating violent crime in American communities.”

Suppressors make shooting safer (for your ears). I don’t have a problem with this or SBS and SBRs.

The tax stamp was just an extra piece of bureaucracy that delayed acquisition and put you out an extra $200 per device. All purchases still go through a background check.

Not only that but the fact that anti-gunners here, acted like suppressors some how make a firearm more dangerous was just bullshit. All you had to do was look at countries with super strict gun control and see that they were required for most shooting purposes. NZ and the UK being the two were you're required to run them for certain areas.

Fuck trump and this SCOTUS but the left needs to stop with the bullshit gun control quip and focus on what will actually have a change to our societal violence.

We need more people on the left to learn about firearms instead of just living in fear of them.

Just taking a firearm safety class would probably help a lot of people stop being so ignorant.

A ton of people on the left know, own, and train with firearms. It's the corporate Democrats that are scared bitches.

Unfortunately there are a lot of anti-2a people still. I have noticed a ton of LGBTQ+ who went from anti-2a to getting strapped after this admins 2nd term.

This actually makes sense, and legally speaking as soon as the $200 went away, there was no legal reasoning to keep the forms.

The forms were justified by paying the tax, no tax, no forms.

I can't think of a single criminal who used a silencer to commit a crime

Isn't that more evidence of a suppressor's strategic utility than their unpopularity?

The clearance for apparent homicides is only about 50%. And doesn't include "nobody's seen X since they ran away" and the like.

Hahaha. "We are loosening controls on weapons to combat violent crime. We are also loosening liquor control enforcement to combat underage drinking and removing speed limits to reduce traffic fatalities."

Officials went on to say, "it takes a good guy with a drink to crash into a bad guy with a drink."

Suppressors do not make a firearm more lethal. The UK and NZ require them for certain areas as a noise reduction device. I wish you anti-2a people would actually spend some time to learn what you're against. You're just like the pro-life idiots. Ignorant to the subject and driven by emotion.

I'm only anti-2A insofar as it prevents reasonable regulation. But there is an irony here I enjoy.

ETA: the policy covers suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and certain other firearms.

So it's a bit disingenuous to single out suppressors and suggest that's the whole thing. That said it could cover squirt guns and the irony would still be there. They're announcing fighting against violent crime by relaxing restrictions on firearms.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In the US, you're not putting the guns back in the box. Doesn't matter what gun control you can come up with. They're here to stay. While their statement is a "hey magas, look what we did for you" bullshit, it's not like guns don't stop crime. Most anti-2as are all about taking away firearms from civilians but will tell people to call the police....who show up with...guns. The same anti-2a groups leadership usually have.....armed security. So you can joke all you want and think it's ironic but end of the day, someone is armed to protect you.

I'm not anti-gun. Look, none of us are fixing the world by arguing on the internet. The most ardent gun nut and the most vitriolic pacifist online are that way because it gets attention. I don't know that I wouldn't give this a lot of thought and support the measure, though if it's the Trump administration doing something I'd give some long fucking odds I'd agree except by accident.

None of that changes the fact that announcing you are fighting violent crime while relaxing gun laws is the mixedest of messages and is hilarious side by side.
