It's also a referendum for stripping immigrant healthcare and making provincial law superior to federal law.

[–] JTode@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

And they appear to have voted yes on all the "should we continue to be the worst motherfuckers in the universe and rededicate ourselves to balkanizing Canada?" questions.

Yeah, I almost feel as if the separation vote is running cover for those two topics, because they'd cause an outrage by and of themselves if they weren't wrapped up in this bundle.

It absolutely ran cover. Almost double the votes on the "big question" than the other nine more insidious ones. And the results reflect it, depressingly.

Hasn’t it been said the propaganda driving this is from the USA?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 21 hours ago

Immigrunts taking our jerbs, voting in our erections, getting free hospitals.

[–] generallynonsensical@piefed.ca 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's deeper than that. It's century-old grievances bundled with anti-vaxers losing their minds during covid lockdowns (border blocking, trucker circle jerks, shutting down Ottawa, etc.). Once covid was done they needed a new cause and the seditionists locked on to that rage.

The Fifth Estate (CBC) has an excellent short doc on it.

Yep, they sound like the same people. There is this very similar messaging all these people have in every country.

I want to say let them separate and find out they can’t do it. But this is what the US wants and you guys can’t risk it happening.

It not deep at all. This is fomented by foreign groups seeking to destabilize Canada. A tiny group of idiots are having their beleifs inflamed and funded to cause Canada internal strife.

[–] TheSecondVariety@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

It IS way deeper than just the stuff happening right now. The problems go back many decades, almost a century.

Welcome to the club. Problems are externally influenced but solutions are expected to be driven internally.

I really hate the wedge between the US and Canada. You all are rad.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes. Look at the amount of maple MAGAts wrapped in they grotesque US flag when they’re at separation rallies.

Let’s call it what it is: An annexation vote, not separation.

[–] deeprlyeh@lemmus.org 16 points 2 days ago

Its part of the technocracy nonsense driven by Elon’s family, Thiel, etc…

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It also slowed down for about a day or two after Ukraine hit that russian data centre

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 1 points 1 day ago

You gotta have regional redundancy if you want to be taken seriously, multi cloud is the way to go.

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago

really can't wait to not here about this nonsense anymore after the results come out... but I KNOW they will just invent some bullshit about the referendum being unfair.

[–] JTode@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I wish this shit had started 30 years ago when I could credibly participate in whatever form of war we end up fighting.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

They don't need a vote.

Just trade in the passport and get on the bus for Montana. ICE will pick them up on that side and - since they no longer have a country - they'll be sent to, like, Liberia or something.

Just because you want to leave Canada, doesn't mean you can take the crown's land. Bu-bye.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They realize that BC won't separate with them right?

We keep the highway and therefore the cities that are bysected by the highway (Calgary) for ourselves and they can get some accommodation for crossing the highway without it being a border crossing.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

BC also keeps the pipelines that ship oil to the sea. Alberta is landlocked, their only option is pipelines to the states.

[–] ZC3rr0r@piefed.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Guess the bargaining chip they've already pulled out to help secure US support for their newly announced nation, should the separatists win.

[–] TheSecondVariety@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Thats why the USA is pushing it and welcoming these separatist leaders to special meetings. If Alberta separates then we'll hose them on the pipeline and there will be no future pipeline expansion. The USA is the one that stands to benefit from that because they've been hosing Alberta for years on the oil.
