At best, a thinly veiled advertisement...

[–] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 15 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I mean, what else does anyone expect? The company which makes my cast iron skillet, which I love, writes blog posts about recipes for cast iron skillets, and always adds links to their products.

I've always hated this argument: "Everyone else is a piece of trash too, so we should accept the current state of everyone acting like garbage because they want to make money!"

[–] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Why is it trash for a business to write articles about how they're beneficial to you and how to use them?

[–] apples_and_pears@mastodon.world 2 points 9 months ago

@asdfasdfasdf @thantik Most adverts aren't like that - proton.me might be the exception. Advertisers irritate the potential customer or treat them like sheep. After a while potential customers feed everything that might smell like advertising into the shredder, whether they should or not.

You can thank abusive advertisers for that mindset.

Because they're using a free platform (Lemmy) to post an advertisement...

Without paying advertisement money? -- That's just the first one.

Second one is all advertisements posted in communities that are meant for organic discussion is jarring and serves to attempt to brand-brainwash anyone who runs across it?

Corporations need to stay out of sites like this and let people talk amongst themselves and make suggestions - basically by posting it here, they're operating an SEO scheme and using everyone here as their pawn.

You've been inundated with this shit for so long, you're now not only blind to it, but making excuses for its existence.

testeronious is Proton's official Lemmy account?

[–] alex_herrero@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

No. The team have official handles and ourselves, Volunteer mods, as in reddit. But that user is just a user AFAIK.

Why would it matter if it was an official or unofficial account? This whole subforum is literally an advertisement. Look at the mod list. "ProtonPrivacy" right there...

And the title of the post is "5 skiff alternatives" where they go..."us, us, us, us again, and oh there's this other guy"

[–] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

they're using a free platform to post and advertisement

corporations need to stay out of sites like this

So they didn't actually post anything here and normal people are posting the article themselves, which is exactly what you said you think should happen.

I mean I totally understood why they chose to give themselves an advertisement but I would still like it if they gave alternatives like tutanota, anon addy, mullvad. Even with those good alternatives, I still go with proton because the unlimited plan is pretty fair and I like the cohesiveness of everything.

[–] Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg 6 points 9 months ago

I mean, standard notes at least is not one of their products.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 4 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Thinly veiled? The link is proton.me lol

[–] thantik@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I mean, they make it sound like they're going to suggest 5 DIFFERENT services and they just go... "Proton, proton, proton, proton, proton".

So yeah. Thinly. Like, skin of your teeth thin.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

There's Standard Notes and SimpleLogin too. That's 2/5. But my point was rather that it's shit on their own site, I don't think they're pretending it's anything other than advert.

[–] thantik@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

SimpleLogin is theirs.

SimpleLogin is the product of Proton AG, registered in Switzerland under number CHE-354.686.492.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Oh, I didn't know that. Do they also own Standard Notes?

[–] thantik@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Not that I'm aware of. If they have a stake in it, it's not listed anywhere publicly.

[–] alex_herrero@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

No, it's not. An awesome product BTW, IMHO.

[–] JoMomma@lemm.ee 6 points 9 months ago

You're starting to sound a little desperate there Proton, maybe dial it back notch
