I'll just add that according to modern Laws of Armed Conflict (LOAC) the current definition of a military target may include schools, hospitals, religious sites and culturally relevent monuments should they be used by enemy forces.

Even in WW1 and WW2 when these rules were being written, if your enemy was hiding in a church, that was okay. But if they stored munitions or fired from the church, it and everyone in it would be considered valid military targets.

It was designed that way in order to stop soldiers from hiding in hospitals and schools saying "You can't shoot us, there are women, children and the sick in here" while they used that amnesty to kill countless others.

Just a distinction a lot of people tend to miss when they talk about "The Geneva Convention."

So what's the alternative to combatting Russian and Chinese imperialism as a western-born leftist?

How would/should an organised socialist military industrial complex shake out and not also be labeled imperialist? As someone who hasn't read Lenin, what is the solution to creating a society we dream of without the "big stick" that is NATO?

I don't put my faith in believing there is no god. I know there is no god.

That said... It is literally the job of a politician in a secular society to enact change not guided by their religious views but by the desires of their constituents backed by the latest studies, research and science at the time. A god has no part in it.

I'm not even going to read your wall of text. Go find yourself a cozy theocracy to live in if you think the government should be influenced by religion.

Church belongs nowhere near the state.

Should you practice, you are not restricted from being religious in private. You are however restricted from incorporating that religion into the government you run.

That's all. Quit being unhinged.

When I look at American politics it really seems like almost all modern problems can be blamed on Nixon and Reagan.

It very well could be NATO doctrine. Militaries figured out real quick that you have to keep troops alive long enough to fight. Whereas it seems civilian workers are treated worse.

Funny how the military, being an innately fascist system (meritocracy) also happens to be the most socialist system many countries have. Room and board, fair wages, a viable path to promotion, medical care all in return for your work and possibly your life.

The military radicalized me to democratic socialism.

Okay, sweet. Then that's identical to the system I've been told about for Canadian Forces and similar to what I've seen with other militaries. Crazy how that works. Especially seeing American states that are so pro military and anti-labour fail to meet the basic criteria even the DoD follows.

I've been told that the armies in many countries use sliding scales of work-rest cycles based on temperature and humidity. For example in Canada, above 35°C you may only have half the crew working 30 minutes on 30 minutes off. Meaning you have 50% of the work being done 100% of the time. Hydration and heat stroke checks are strongly enforced as well. The American army does similar if I've been told correctly.

How American civilians and labourers are not allowed these very same standards is insane to me. People die because of this shit and unions are just okay with this?

What's troublesome with that is American cups are something like 237ml and a Canadian cup is 250ml, a quart a litre and a gallon 4 litres.

Makes using American recipes a bit finicky. So now I convert recipes to weight. Though I basically never use a scale or measuring cup when actually cooking.

If you're having trouble paying your bills and your boss gives you a raise that makes paying your bills easier, right? Now you have freed up income that can properly go other places and be spread evenly instead of going paycheque to paycheque.

The military funding in Canada is Anemic to say the least. Yes, the money goes towards bases and subs up north but this is still a net positive for funding in the CAF. Thus a net positive for Canadians.

**Even if that money is given to you via grocery store gift cards as a "bonus" you now don't have to spend rent money on food.

Bootlicker take btw.

Canadians and the public tend to be supportive of infrastructure or spending that supports their life or provides tangible good.

The Canadian military has time and time again proven to support the Canadian people in times of crisis. Whether that be snowfall in Toronto or record flooding in Ottawa or annual forest fires in Alberta that are getting worse.

We can spend the money on the military to ensure its there for when we need it. Provide the military money to house, clothe and feed those soldiers, or...

We can fund AI that most Canadians are worried about.
