One thing that struck me, watching Alone In The Wilderness 1 & 2, was how infrequently Dick wore a watch. It makes sense when you think about it, what with him not having to adhere to a strict schedule very often, and frequently doing the type of labor where a watch could be broken or become a safety liability. He only seems to wear a watch when he's not doing any harder labor.

God I love those documentaries; Mr. Proenneke was a real one.

I have the blue dial, metal bracelet version of that, and it was my favorite beater watch until it died and wouldn't restart with a new battery.

It's still in my dead-Casio collection, along with my CMD-10 and CMD-30 TV "Remote Commanders" from high school, and my DBC-150 which likely still has my high-school sweetheart (now my wife) phone number in it. LOL, I was such a prankster with those tv-remote watches.

As the title states, what non-metallic (plastic, ceramic, carbon fiber, wood, etc) watches are worth buying or knowing about? Probably going to be lots of adventuring stuff - so fake bonus points for non-sporting watches - but if a Pro-Trek, G-Shock, or Suunto is what you like and think every person should know about, post it up.

I'll get things started with a classic, just to get it out of the way...

This was an idea that popped into my head while I was falling asleep last night:

What if you were gifted a magical watch box? The box has room for 8 watches. You can keep the box as long as you fill it with 8 watches, but they must adhere to the rules. The box will remain perfectly secure by means of a magical spell, for as long as it is in your possession. If you break any of the rules, the Magic Watch Box disappears, taking all of your watch choices with it.

The Rules

  1. All 8 spots must have an occupant for you to keep the box and all of its watches
  2. All 8 watches must be different types / styles / categories*
  3. The first watch can cost no more than $200 (or the equivalent in other currencies), and each spot doubles in maximum value**

NOTE: I will add your suggestions from the comments up here as edits.

*i.e. only 1 diver, 1 dress, 1 field, 1 pilot, 1 smartwatch, 1 chrono, 1 GMT, etc.

**1: $200, 2: $400, 3: $800, 4: $1600, 5: $3200, 6: $6400, 7: $12,800, 8: $25,600
