Hm.. invest into your companies cybersecurity before or after you get hacked?

Companies don't care enough about risks if they are not forced to account for them.

I'm not surprised you're from there. In Germany people often talk about how pupils are still hit by teachers in India, often followed by a debate whether this is sth we can judge from a German perspective.

My grandpa was also hit by his teachers in the 50s and my parents seldomly. But I never experienced it in the 90s/00s. Abuse is rather psychological nowadays I would say. More subversive.

Generally, no. I wouldn't give respect to anyone who mistreats me and would probably report it (if student) to a higher authority through my parents. But because this issue differs across cultures, it's not that easy to defend yourself against it sometimes. In Japan or India hierarchy between different generations is seen as something more important than in Europe for example, so they might put blame rather on pupils than teachers no matter what. In Europe, teachers would be fired immediately if they behaved as you describe. So it really depends on your circumstances and if your parents support you in your cause.

I would try to find a compromise between what your culture expects of you and your personal moral compass. Otherwise people might not side with you and you will just have a tough life. So be clever in how you approach it. Also if other students feel similar it might be a good idea if you all tell your parents to connect each other to do sth against it. If hierarchy is an issue they have more power to do sth against it.

But this is not a big ol neocapitalistic conspiracy against someone personally. Maybe your pictures do suck, maybe your bio is perfectly written etcetc. Many reasons why it might or might not work out for you.

Those companies are not as aware of their actions as many people think. They see 'x' happens and they might find a way to let it happen more often, but they seldom know why it happens.

Especially when it's about interactions between people and not just system-user interaction.

if these apps could actually teach you a language, you'd eventually get proficient enough at the language to no longer need the app

If it worked for you word of mouth will spread and others will try it as well. I don't see why these companies shouldn't be interested in that. They might lengthen the process and not give you the most efficient solution however.

People find love through dating apps, people can learn the basics of a language through language apps. The company wins either way. Maximizing screen time is not everything.

This isn't to say that these apps don't have a place in the language learning process, but rather I'm saying that you need to be incredibly wary not just of the privacy issues, but of how to actually use these apps effectively. If you're aware of their tricks, then they become less effective.

Good point. It's hard to learn a language and if you invest the time you'll get a good grasp on it through these apps. I leant multiple languages at school and it was really similar to what Duolingo e.g. are doing.

BUT in the end you still can't master a language without speaking it with other people. That however, is not a service that these apps can provide. They should, however, make it possible for you to find a basic foundation for communication. The gamification aspect also helps.

Regarding the privacy argument I completely agree.

Ah ok I'm not deep enough in it to know the differences. I just played it for a certain time. But the aesthetics give me such a vibe haha.

Yeah I'll text you in case I'll try it :)

Great you're having such a good time on there. Maybe I'll even check it out for the nostalgia at some point haha

And maybe there are also other bigger servers. I'm sure you'll find some on Google.

P-servers are so much more fun anyway. I used to play Flyff (Korean MMPORG) on one and I was even able to finish the game. It would never be possible on the normal servers. Even when you spend the money. Just because of the endless grind and low XP rate.
