What are the benefits of hosting a personal DNS server?

What do you use your homelabs for? In the past I kept a personal server for RDP and access to files on the go but that is no longer necessary due to cloud technology. (alien.top)

I have been seeing the cool rigs on here and have been inspired to get back into it, but would be more motivated if there was some practical use. Are there any resources that provide project ideas and tutorials?
