I use Pop_OS because I really like having so much much GUI control via the keyboard. I'm patiently waiting for Cosmic to update things a bit.
Deja Dup backs my local machines to my Synology NAS. That uses Hyper-backup to send everything to Dropbox.
The benefit to finding a Mastodon server with a community that you find interesting is that you get a local feed that is somewhat relevant to your interests. If's far from necessary but it ads one more dimension to surfacing content.

I gave up on gmail a couple years ago too. It was a LOT of work to migrate but there have been several stories since that make me glad I did it. Plus I now my gmail is nothing but spam and it's satisfyingly like having a hotmail account just for spam 20 years ago.
I like that they've read the memo about fediverse projects being named after animals, but firefish doesn't fit. They should have gone with Coelacanth or something like that... but easier to spell.
