“Aren’t the exact same” is a huge understatement…

Cryptee is one that comes to mind.

Beyond that, the money is still going to Google, Yandex, Brave, Bing etc via API payments. If they actually created their own search engine that was any good I’d be more inclined to pay for access.

Edit: They do claim to have their own small indexes (Teclis and TinyGem) that they sell API access to, but I’m doubtful it adds significant value.

Do you remember specifically which mattress you tried? From when I’ve looked, they have some really cheap options, and some higher quality options.

I slept on on of their cheap mattress just out of college and liked it, but I haven’t used them in a while. I’m strongly considering their HAUGSVÄR mattress as a budget-friendly/midrange option.

I beg to differ. IKEA sells at a bunch of price points with good value. The quality and durability of their furniture is better than their competition for the most part.

I distinctly remember them selling at least one mattress for more than $1000 USD. That’s not cheap unless you’re exceptionally wealthy.

Another independent search company with its own index is great. Repackaging Bing and Google isn’t good enough. I’d be cautious with their privacy claims though.

I’m stuck on Joplin personally, but have you taken a look at Standard Notes? I think it checks all your boxes.

Here are some options I use in my rotation.

Brave Search (skip the browser)

Mojeek

Qwant (French)

Yandex (Russian)

Mullvad Leta (Mullvad VPN subscription required)

MetaGer (German meta search)

Startpage (Private Google results)

DuckDuckGo (Private Bing results)

SearXNG and similar self hosted options are awesome, but I’ve found them unreliable.

Be skeptical of Kagi… It’s promoted pretty heavily around here for something that’s not FOSS.

Not sure why you got downvoted like crazy, but Brave legitimately has a great search engine. It also uses its own crawlers unlike DDG, Startpage or Kagi who are really just meta search engines piggybacking off other companies’ results.
