For people that don't know the reference: here

My wife was thinking I was hacking while I was troubleshooting my VPS. She is way more educated than I am. She loves watching CSI, so that's probably why she thought that.

I'm not. But it's probably the same reason as WhatsApp in Europe. Why be on WhatsApp when you can be on signal (or whatever). The answer is: that's where the people are. The fediverse is amazing. And I've totally switched over and don't use reddit anymore. But it has but a tiny fraction of the users compared to reddit.

For example. /r/TipOfMyJoystick has multiple posts daily. !TipOfMyJoystick@retrolemmy.com hasn't had activity in months. It's the nature of a smaller user base.

Tell that to circuit board designers. It's horrible every time a 3d model of a circuit board is added. The component height gives no visual advantage, and it's slow as shit on corporate computers.

Trump doing actual pedo and rape shit and being a convicted felon

Religious zealot chuds in the US: "there's no proof"

If only there was a way we could fit double the cars, maybe even triple in a smaller plot of land.

I really don't get how America survives with the lack of parking garages. It saves space, giving room to more nature. It saves walking, considering USians are generally considered less fit.

All the large parking lots really bothered me when I was there. Most are empty most of the time, and look like post apocalyptic wasteland.

If only because it was the last windows to have the windows classic theme.

Here in the Netherlands workers like that are subsidized. Meaning the employer pays less for disabled workers, while they still earn over minimum wage. The difference is paid by the government.

Comfort has nothing to do with it. If you don't show up at your work, you don't have income anymore. There's no fallbacks by design. They keep you in line by forcing you to work. And they made sure the cost of living was high enough that most people have to work a 2nd job, so protests can't even be held after work hours.

You've been set up for this after decades of preparing.

It looks like a board where they indeed probably put the components on by machine, however without solder paste, since it was going through the wave solder anyway. But you would need to glue the components down then.

That's why there is so much excessive solder. If it was printed with solder paste, it wouldn't have this much solder.

I recently played The Dig for the first time, which passed me by when I was younger. I had heard of it I didn’t realise it was another Lucas/Spielberg game. I’d just come off a couple of other Lucasarts games and it was quite different.

Looking back it seems quite divisive, I think because it was so different to the comedy Lucasarts adventures, but there’s still a lot of love for it floating around the internet, and now I’ve added to it here if you fancy a long read: https://p7uen.neocities.org/posts/2023-06-23-The-Dig

If you've been meaning to play it, or always wanted to try it; this is the definitive edition to play it on a modern computer!

There's even a floppy disk version available.

It includes features like:

  • Mod Support with some extras using Lua
  • OpenGL Acceleration
  • SDL 2.0 Support
  • New graphical effects
  • Multiplayer Support (Up to four players)
  • High Quality Packs which make the game look better, provide better sounds and even music you might never have known existed in the original games
  • In-game Menu for Vorticons Keen as well as a new HUD
  • Named save slots
  • Unrestricted Joystick Support

and much more

It was way ahead of its time. Having sloped floors, catwalks, transparant textures and moving platforms while still being limited by 90 degree walls. A mouse based shooting with the crosshair moving across the screen and using that same crosshair for your HUD and picking up items. (not unlike what system shock did)

And above all, it's a lot of fun!

I love the way your character finishes boot camp by cheating in all possible ways.

They even have games released this year for DOS!

This port, or re-implementation as it's called, has several improvements including:

  • wide-screen mode
  • smooth scrolling & movement mode with increased frame rate
  • quick saving
  • improved game controller support
  • extended modding features

A great way to (re)play this awesome game from before Duke jumped to the 3rd dimension!

Not everyone knows that id software made an FPS before their smash hit of Wolfenstein 3D. It's rough around the edges, but still an important part of history.

I remember playing this in the old days. Very open ended space strategy game with creative non-humanoid races and a deep skill tree.

I recommend this game for anyone looking for a DOS era strategy game.

After the successful Voxel Doom the creator of that project is releasing voxel Doom II.

I cannot wait. Voxel doom worked so good, so doom 2 might be even more awesome!
