That is indeed a massive improvement, but until they allow multiple profiles per number - that would still mean either using the same account with internet randos as I do with IRL friends, or renting a whole other number and risking losing the account once the ownership of the number expires.

Depends on how you set it up. I had Wireguard installed and couldn't figure out why only some sites got unblocked by it... And then it turns out it doesn't use the VPN server's DNS automatically, only if you specify so in the settings.

I am stupid, I know. But that's just an example.

Ah, and I am into radio) I don't see the offense, as well as I don't see the inherent evil here. The protocol wasn't catering to such people (idk if there are even examples of a protocol being this - only platforms, like Gab, come to mind) and it's just unfortunate it's getting such associations.

In such a situation, I usually just ask to be out of the picture.

I associate it more with a simplex mode for radio.

"Darkweb"? I was under the impression that it means a messenger that is onion/i2p-only. Simplex, while having an easy Tor integration, is mostly used by clearnet.

For me, the main distinction is selfhostability (although I have concerns about the majority keeping using the default servers, I could still ask a friend or family member to use mine).

Also I am a bit concerned about them pushing the "No identifiers" thing which seems misleading, since you're still identified, just per-conversation.

Yeah! Plus some kids commute pretty far to extracurriculars right after school, and they need to stay in contact even more.

This is not binary like this either. There are a TON of variables.

  • You can have the IPs you communicate with visible to your ISP directly, or hidden from an ISP but visible to a VPN, or hidden from ISP but visible to the Tor network, the safety of which depends on "against whom".
  • You can have your messages encrypted in transit but visible to the messaging server, or encrypted end-to-end and thus useless to the messaging server too.
  • You can have the identity you post under bound to an identity outright, or you could obfuscate that.
  • You can use a centralized messenger that has your whole communication graph and all metadata, or you can use a federated one with multiple identities and thus metadata scattered across multiple places. Or Briar that doesn't have servers at all.

All depends on whom you want to be private against, as well as how much effort they want to put into getting your information. There is no "absolute privacy"... But there is "requiring more effort from the chosen adversary than you're worth".
