Yep, depending on what you do the outdated Ubuntu packages can be a real pain. I'm going to switch from Linux mint sometime soon* for that reason.

* sometime soon, aka when I finally put in the time and figure out how to install arch

You could just go to lemmy.world. That's your home instance, it works kinda like an email provider. And if you (for example) use gmail you can access your mail at the Gmail website and the same is true for Lemmy.

But just like you could download an email client you can get yourself an Lemy client and use that*. That client will make API requests to your home instance to get the posts it presents to you. Your home instance in turn will communicate with other instances in order to show their posts to you.**

clients/websites you could try

Here is one list and here is another. Also note that some clients are actually webapps.

* you probably know this considering you use the Lemmy client sync

** Disclaimer: the last part about how Lemmy works is just how I think it works based on what I have read. I could be completely wrong.

Yep, and that's the beauty of it ❤️🐧

Nice! It would be nice to see how "nice" you've been, aka the ratio between up votes and down votes. But that would probably require a login. (Also we could take the up vote down vote ratio for the entirety of Lemmy to rate the content quality but that's a whole other story)

Also if the code was run through an optimizer (which all modern games should be) the code is even harder to make sense of as it doesn't necessarily have the same structure and the same variables as the original code

I natively speak Swedish but I've studied and used English for 4-5 years so I speak English fluently and would consider myself bilingual. I can think in either English or Swedish and I can mix sentences in Swedish and English freely. But I never think in a language that's really a combination of those languages (what we would call svengelska in Swedish).

I'm also studying french and German but I'm not fluent in any of those languages. When using those languages (or at least German) I think in a language that's truly a combination of that language and Swedish/English. I use words from all languages and construct sentences as I would in Swedish (reverse word order for questions, no weird German thing with adjectives at the end etc). This of course becomes a pain as soon as I have to express a thought to someone else.

Truly nobody knows, it's an open research question. And to complicate matters more we know (as others have mentioned here) that everyone doesn't think in the same way.

Well then, take your beloved capitalism and get the hell out of here. There are lots of profit driven social media platforms that you could try out.

My point is just that I don't want anyone spying on me and it doesn't matter if the one spying is the US, china, french or russia. They have nothing to do with my personal data.

Thank you. This is an important correction but does hover not mean that the US government isn't spying on you through your phone, just that they, if they do it, have other means to do so. 2017 wikileaks revealed that the CIA had an immense collection of tools to hack personal phones and computers. But this probably means that they don't hack everyone just people of special interest, which is good news 😀

Here is the wikileaks article and here is an yahoo article.

EDIT: of course they can also buy the data from Google.

It doesn't matter if it's a Huawei or some American phone, China, USA and others will spy on you no matter what phone you choose only the means differ. If you buy a Huawei china will have backdoors in your phone and the USA will buy all your info and if you get an American phone the USA will have backdoors and china will buy the data.

Also I find the focus on china kinda weird. I ultimately don't want anyone stealing my data, not even the USA. Just like china the USA has been involved in mass surveillance and a lot of war crimes. For example American soldiers have been found guilty of rapping and killing children. From Wikipedia (United States war crimes > war on terror > Iraq war):

On 12 March 2006, a 14-year-old Iraqi girl named Abeer Qassim Hamza al-Janabi was raped and subsequently murdered along with her 34-year-old mother Fakhriyah Taha Muhasen, 45-year-old father Qassim Hamza Raheem, and 6-year-old sister Hadeel Qassim Hamza al-Janabi.

After all of that I want to ask you one question, do you really want the USA sterling your data?
Also what you answer that question with doesn't matter since both china and the USA will be stealing your data no matter if you want it or which phone you buy.

As a final note I should maybe mention that I'm not American if you haven't figured that out yet. Also please don't accuse me of spreading Chinese propaganda. I'm advocating against the USA and the CIA, not for china.

Also sorry for being so political in a kind of not that political thread.

For me the fediverse has become that "alternative web" but of course it has its limits... But I'm too young to judge, google has been crap as long as I can remember. Regarding the alternative web, I could imagine a community run search engine operating on an alow list basis inorder to keep any capitalist crap out.

Also I'll have to read that book (:
