Hello, this is not a question on how to configure my router (maybe) it's more for the concept that I can't understand.

By the way, I only have a default isp router, that I can't even modify the dns, so I assume I'll have to buy my own.

So o want to have all my IOT devices on a different network, so as to not compromise my newly made homeserver, but what I don't get is how will I be able to turn on and off my light bulbs.

All the articles I see on creating VLANs tell something like "devices on port 2 can communicate with port 1 (internet) but cannot communicate with devices on port 3,4,5, 6..." and so on.

But if my IOTs are on a VLAN A and my Phone, computers, server are on VLAN B, how can I turn the lights on and off from my phone?

Maybe I'm getting it wrong, and my phone should also be on the same VLAN as the IOT, but then how will I connect to my server?

Thanks.

Not now, i installed it a couple of times before but never actively used it, nor do I have it installed at the moment on any machine, besides my android.

I was affected!! It's so strange, first time something like this happened to me, it's like I won a local lottery or something, don't know what to feel now.

All my newer files are still there, but the older ones and all bin, zip, tar and 7zip are not there anymore.

So glad I started the homelab / self-hosted thing a few weeks ago, I have copies of everything locally on multiple storages.

Jellyfin for photos? But why? You have nextcloud that does it better, and you can have immich that does it even better.

Whats the appeal of Jellyfin for this purpose? Like you won't ever sync, it's just photos stored somewhere for people to see?

And here I am putting tape on all my devices.

My office looked like a Xmas decoration before a taped everything.

Hello!

I'm aware of this awsome list, but recently I stumbled across this private list that contains other solutions, like IT-Tools and Llama (chat-gpt), so here it is, some other tools that are not in our favorite github page. (maybe the owners there can update it?)

I'm about to go over Google photos limit, and I already pay for it, next tier is more than double what I pay now.

You guys understand the fine lines better than anyone, maybe you'll point out something i'm missing or have no idea.

In any case, doesn't matter the machine chosen, I'll put 32g of memory, 2Gb NMVE and 2Gb HDD sata internally, plus some other storage through usb. The 2 storage I'll buy now, the memory might have to wait another month.

I'll install:

Proxmox, Immich, NextCloud, Plex (Or jellyfin), transmission, a NAS manager (to be decided, probably OMV), two Ubuntu Servers, one to run some light docker services and other to play around, and a Windows VM for some light use when needed.

Immich and NextCloud will run directly on the NMVE, with backup to the internal HDD and another one to the external USB drive. Plex, as i don't use much, can also have the files on the NMVE, but no backup is needed.

Dell i7 7050 -6700T

Beelink EQ12 - N100

Beelink SER5 - Ryzen 5 5560U

For my usage, considering not wasting too much electricity too, and with some leverage to add more services as I learn , which would be the best option? The machine I buy will have to be my server for several years, maybe I buy a dedicated NAS next black friday, but that is it.

Thanks in advance.

Hello there, I'm in this rabbit hole of self hosting, but it's just for me and my wife, mostly for me though.

I've put together on a broken laptop of 10yo, Ubuntu server 500gb (motherboard) + 2TB storage (DVD tray), CasaOS, Nextcloud, Immich and Plex.

I have a total of 300gb of photos and videos (including immich dB) , 50Gb of docs (including nextcloud dB), and everything else is disposable, like some movies.

I do not plan to have extra services, maybe a password manager.

In this black Friday I'll buy a mini pc i5 and another 2TB drive to store zipped/encrypted backup files. And will most likely try proxmox there.

Now to the point, I'm seeing a lot people doing NAS separately, and some even putting things like Plex on the NAS server and not on the "main server". And the question is, don't I already have a NAS? My Ubuntu is sharing 2TB through the network, I'm configuring backups (with duplicati). What would I really gain if I buy a cheap synology NAS only for a shared folder? The mini pc I'll buy with i5 16gb won't do a better job than a cheap 1ghz 2mb memory NAS?

I hope I make sense, thanks in advance.

Hello!

I have tailscale setup and can access my machine from outside, but i also have a domain that I don't use? How could I proceed, what services do I need, if I want to see my homelab without vpn, just typing "www.mylamedomain.com"?

Considerations:

- I do not have fixed ip (only a local network fixed ip for the server)

- I cannot modify anything on the router, its a shitty router from the provider, and I can't even replace the router because it has a card reader in it, like a bank card, without that card or that router, I dont have internet nor TV. (i'm thinking of changing provider, but the others have slower speed)

- I have Ubuntu server, with CasaOS and NexeCloud inside CasaOS.

- Talescale is installed directly on the host system.

Thanks in advance!
