A thought for shortening the season without sacrificing games would be to follow the "bubble model". ie have the teams spend a week or two in one city where they would not have to travel between games.
The NBA could select 4 host cities that don't have an NBA team and play the in-season tournament there. This would provide the opportunity to play a lot of games in a short amount of time. In addition, this allows players to get rest / treatment immediately after the games.
