The UK moves are very worrying. We're trying to help people to move away from big tech at our site https://www.rebeltechalliance.org/

We recommend fediverse protocols wherever possible - so I'm interested in the comments here about how that is affected

Great list - thanks for sharing! I hadn't heard of Inkscape - that's a good find.

More alternatives here in the Alternatives menus of this site: https://www.rebeltechalliance.org/stopusingbigtech.html

It could be a reducing interest in posting totally public stuff. Perhaps people want to just use group chats in Signal instead?

RSS. And very happy that it is!

As long as software is available in the Software Manager to be installed that way... I don't care what format it's in.

But don't make normies go to the terminal. It's inhumane, and really does not help the masses get away from big tech - which is a worthier goal than keeping your software terminal-only.

Would SSO every be possible with ActivityPub?

Like if you built a new app (network) on AP and allow people to sign in with their Mastodon handle?

They don't have to be, as far as I understand it. I've installed a few websites as apps on my phone (because their app had trackers in it) and they can work really well. Examples are Bluesky and Flipboard.

An example where I agree with you is LinkedIn - installed as a web app due to trackers - but they know this, and the whole point of their app is to get you with Facebook and Microsoft trackers, so they make the web app experience miserable on purpose.

But (and correct me if I'm wrong) a PWA made by a non-surveillance capitalist could be just as good as a native app.

Valid. Except on some browsers e.g. Vivaldi you can put sites on a list that retain their cookies even when you clear the rest.

Why not a PWA?

It says "Payments are made after exchanging existing money into electronic money with the help of an Exchange service, that is, a payment service provider for Taler."

Do they say anywhere who that payment service provider is? And are there options for who to use?
