It is still surprisingly far from straightforward to get it working

EDIT: I mean Android on Linux is difficult. Not Linux itself.

Most? Is that guess based on anything?

I am sure getting accurate data on the subject would be impossible, as Linux users are more likely to not consent to the type of telemetry that could track that.

You must be confusing it with GrapheneOS. LineageOS has literally always supported devices from multiple different manufacturers.
