This actually has me thinking of David Lynch. He often has 2 different realities colliding with a monstrous character that influences the collision in a way.
Say the idyllic suburban life vs the underworld of blue velvet. The media is similarly a representation of a clean, good and kind america with the reality being .... well.
Someone like trump is the monstrous figure who causes the two to collide.
A bit, yes. BUT I go away for a few months and then return to Lemmy with full force. When I'm active here it feels like an active space, when I'm not active, it feels a lil dead.
So the issue is more about the way you engage with the community.

Everything has always been derivative of smth. We all stand on the shoulders of those before us.
Having said that, the Dennis Villeneuve dune does not overrely on previous adaptations like the lynch dune.
But guess what, plot comes from the book, themes come from the book. That is just being loyal to the source material since the medium in which the story is now being told is different.
As a whole the film has enough soul and individuality to stand out. You wouldn't watch it and think, ah a vague action movie with Arab inspired music.
Film is also a collaborative medium, one man doesn't decide what it is, many have influenced it and hence influences have come in from all over the place.
But Dennis Villeneuve as a director has left his imprint on this movie. If you've seen 2 or 3 of his movies you can watch dune without knowing he made it, you can guess it was him.
The way he works with light and dialogue specifically is individual enough for dune to be a unique movie.
(The general idea of an auteur in cinema is what I'm talking about)
So do we not count potato dishes for India since they were introduced by the Brits or how about tomatoes for Italy?
If we allow ingredients but recipes are the issue, than is Japanese curry not counted for Japan considering it went from India to Britain to Japan?
How about removing biryani from India/ Pakistan since the mughals created it with Persian techniques.
What about fusion cuisines? All the pizzas in the world for example?
Keeping it indigenous is literally impossible bc that idea doesn't even exist.
You cant only consider indigenous cuisine though. In that case it completely changes Mexican cuisine etc. Infact it changes literally every single cuisine in the world with the idea of 'real'
