I'm not a DN so much as just an expat, but going car free was just a glorious side benefit of moving to Singapore and Melbourne. Am in the UK now with a car which I rarely use but would much rather be without one if it was feasible.

Was going to say Hanoi. I don't know why people characterise it as this tranquil quaint little place - it was madness when I visited.
I did seven years in Australia (Melbourne) without a car. It was nice, and manageable, but a situation came up where I eventually had to get one. A lot depends on where you find yourself I guess.
