There was an article recently talking about how forums are still around. Has a decent list too:

Preach! I hate knowing that GV is basically on autopilot as a project at Google. They don't seem to ever treat it like it matters to them.

I've got a Palma. Love it.

Like others here, I keep wifi off while I'm reading and only turn it on to update my Omnivore articles or update my saved position in a book (using Kindle or Kobo apps).

I have no idea how the battery holds up for the people who are trying to use it as a phone (ie using it a lot for browsing or chatting and other battery-heavy apps).

I just wanted a phone sized eReader that could let me install apps other than just a bookstorr. The Palma fits that bill wonderfully.

I can't play anything that requires precision aiming with a controller.

A Steam Controller though? I'm way better. Especially with the gyro aiming or micro adjustments on the touchpads.

I know they are discontinued but as someone like you who had a rough time with those types of games without a mouse, I'd see if you can find a steam controller on ebay or something.

But I don't play FPSes at all any more really. And with games like cyberpunk, I'm always more stealth than action oriented so it hasn't been a problem. And when I have to use a normal controller and am forced to aim, I heavily rely on aim assist settings. I don't care 😂

Personally I stopped custom roms a while back. I'm not hardcore in the anti-google camp though.

If you are, obviously custom roms will be all you should be looking at. Tons of good recommendations in this thread already.

If you're not in this camp though, the default pixel experience has been great for me and might be for you. I find it the least annoying of the oem experiences (not cluttered in features I'll never use, simplified settings menu where I've never had to use the search on since it all made sense etc).

I'd say use the stock rom for a few weeks. If you hate it, custom roms are always there for you.

If you have a file manager app installed you should get that as an option for most content (I use Amaze).

Thanks for this! I was definitely curious about how it would run.

The Minisforum HX80G. That's the older model. They have the HX99G, HX100G and others now. They all range in price but Amazon has sales.

I picked mine up for $650.

I'm the same way but I bought one of those mini pcs that has a laptop cpu/gpu in it, installed ChimeraOS on it which essentially turned it into a steamdeck.

I have that hooked up to my living room tv and it's my main gaming device. It's essentially a console. I never upgrade anything. It runs what I play at 1080p with med or high settings.

Suits me just fine. I mainly just want to sit on my couch and game on the TV instead of being at a desk like I did years ago.

Ah OK. Every time someone asks how to find other communities, I see that Lemmy Explorer site linked, which is why I searched there and was confused why this community wasn't on there.

Nice to know it's showing up in other indexers though.

I checked that Lemmy Explorer site and searched for "patientgamers" and this community don't show up.

Just the ones on lemmy.world and sh.itjustworks

I was just wondering how you all found this place. Are you all on lemmy.ml?

Does this community show up on any lemmy indexer?

Hey everyone,

We're coming up on a year anniversary (I think) of this community and I thought I'd do some giveaways to celebrate that.

It's semi-annoying that not all game stores have digital gift cards you can purchase so there are a few options here.

  1. Amazon digital gift card: for those of you who buy physical games
  2. Physical Steam gift card: the slowest option, as it requires me to leave my house and buy a stamp and mail something (the horror).
  3. Gifted game directly in Steam / GOG.com

For the gifted games / gift cards it'll be capped at $30 -- after all, we're talking about old games here right? If you want a few games that total up to $30, that's cool too.

I'm going to pick two members at random from those who reply here as the winners.

Just comment with what option you prefer, and ideally tell us about what game you'd like to get (I'd prefer to limit the low-effort comments if we can. I like the discussions people have here so please do try to comment more than just "#1" ).

I'll sticky this post and will leave it open for 2 weeks (end of April is the deadline)

Thanks for keeping this community a cool place with good discussions!

UPDATE 4/30/24:

This contest is officially over!

The 2 randomly chosen winnders are:

@Klanky@sopuli.xyz

@Dymonika@beehaw.org

Congrats!

I will be messaging you both individually to get your email addresses or steam/gog usernames so I can gift you your games!

Thanks again to everyone again for keeping this place going!
