Hey, I don't judge. I love all my data hoarder brothers and sisters. I'm just saying, eventually, everyone goes a little crazy and they need to have 100 Pb of storage and when that happens, you fall into the rabbit hole that is the diy NAS server.
They do 1 better, they donate YOUR money and they get the tax benifits and the credit for YOUR donation. And they probably keep a certain % to cever their "overhead".
It's freakin brilliant when you think about it.
You have to be a moron to be the person to donate like that.
It's a data hoarder forum. Everyone hangs around enough on this forum is bound to becomes a NAS diyer at some point. May as we make suggestions toward the inevitability.

Short: runs tests that have a high probability of detecting device problems
Extended or Long: the test is the same as the short check but with no time limit and with complete disk surface examination
Conveyance: identifies if damage incurred during transportation of the device
Ask for a long report before buying. Then run a conveyance when you receive after shipping if you buy.
If you get for free, run a long test.
Depends how used and how much you like your data.
If your buying, I'd for a S.M.A.R.T test report before buying.
If they are free, run a S.M.A.R.T test before you put any data you don't want to lose.
Always have redundancy.
VPN and SFTP. That is the way.
