I think people are starting to become a lot more aware of what advantages are given up by changing the status quo. Not just w.r.t. China, but with a lot of American products, such as cloud, payment providers, operating systems, document processors etc.
Still, this can be abused in the short term on the stock market, so I doubt things will change much.
Sounds a lot like Roald Dahls story Esio Trot. Protagonist makes downstairs neighbors tortoise "grow" with a magical spell (tortoise backwards, replacing it with other tortoise) to win her heart. In the end, tortoise is too big so he "shrinks" it again so it'll fit back into her house.
