Blocking is working for me on 2 Linux machines and Android. Have you tried the update procedure above?

Isn't there an extension that automatically opens FreeTube?

Edit: I found it here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/freetube-redirect/ but it has low reviews and was last updated in 2018. I'm going to see if something else exists.
