I've been using it for years. It works quite well. Sometimes it will break on a website until it gets an update. It gets updated fairly frequently though.

GNU Parallel: It lets you run multiple things in parallel. It's very useful for batch converting large numbers of files.
I'm sure that will just push more people to get their music from soulseek and torrents.
CD-RWs are not magneto-optical. MiniDiscs are though.
I would only rip the ones that you can't download. To get a decent quality transfer from tape, you will need to connect a time base corrector between the VCR and capture card. Unfortunately, they are rather hard to find now and expensive.
A portion of the 5GHz WiFI band overlaps with the 5.8GHz ham band too. There are also a few WiFi radios that will also work above the US WiFi band where they can operate without interference from other license free devices. Those are used in the HamWAN network.

It's not hard to make Linux run on 2GB of RAM. The hard part is getting a web browser to run on 2GB without constantly swapping.
