Back in the day I was a big Usenet fan. What's the modern solution to the spam issue? At the time, folk wisdom was that the demise was being caused by spam, and that due to the nature of the protocol it was somehwhat unsolveable.

I also wonder to what extent activity pub is the barrier to offline use? For reddit, the Slide client had offline reading and iirc posting. I have been disappointed it isn't available for Lemmy. My guess has been it simply isn't a priority for the devs. Maybe eventually we will get it.

I think it would be cool if RSS got put into Lemmy clients. Example you could make a unified inbox for all accounts by automatically getting the private RSS for incoming messages for all logged in accounts. I have manually set this up a couple of times but its tedious. Completely lacks smoothness when it comes to clicking a link, replying etc. But a client could add a little finesse to fix that.

It’s Open Source

If Apple ever built an RSS reader, it’d be like this.

nope

Anyone interested can find (usually free) externally hosted freshRss and TinyRss hosts on the chatons website. Select one of those in the "based on" drop down menu.

I've tried both and like neither. As far as I can tell, they only have a small number of apps. And none of them work offline. With a regular RSS reader you can refresh it when you have internet access, then everything is available when you do not. Like an email client or any other such software.

But it might be suitable to you. So check out the chatons.

Can you post your user style??

But I would very much support having a more compact theme available without a browser extension. I think some tightening up up would make this place look more welcoming. It feels sort of "empty" due to all the white space.

mastodon has some portability features but not the ability to fully move the content of your account: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/ though you can move some stuff like friend lists etc.

I do not know much details about the internal power structures of a company like reddit, but it seems like this guy seems to be a real liability at the moment. I wonder why he is being allowed to go around doing this.

Maybe they are giving him enough rope to hang himself so he can be removed from his position in a few days. Firing a disliked manager is a common union busting tactic. If he can be made into the centre of gravity for all the ire, canning him and making some small backtrack could have a lot of people reconsidering leaving reddit.

Or maybe there truly is no plan....

You mean the guy who commissioned the deepfake has not only regretted it but also has put his own money towards preventing it going forward?

If I understand correctly then nice to hear about someone who doesn't dig in their heels in a moment of humiliation.

My understanding is that he was cheating on his wife but the tape was a fake.

It was probably pretty difficult to get a good incriminating recording.

If only the FBI had this technology in the 50s, they would have been able to make a much better fake recording of MLK cheating on his wife to send to her in the mail. Imagine all the blackmail and shit disturbing they and their sicko friends can do now.

I almost feel like the best defensive thing to do would be to create lots of fake porn of oneself. Then at least no one can hold it over you.

There is a website that will generate deepfakes for a charge. I heard something about it being done with women who do live streaming on twitch or whatever because there is massive data sets available of them. So now their fans (if you'd call them that) are harassing them by making pornos of them. The story I heard was about another streamer, a guy, who had done this and accidentally pulled it up while he was live so it was seen my many people. And the woman who was the subject of the porno was really shocked because like they were friends/colleagues.
