This is only unpopular in the USA, it's the popular opinion everywhere where we don't worship guns.
Well, hardly ever.
Prisons serve to remove a person from society (in the civilised world).
Removing a person from society has two subtly different justifications:
- Prevention: their offence against society is such that society must be protected from them.
- Punishment: their offence against society is such that society wants them deprived of society.
Consider the difference between violent crimes (1) and nonviolent crimes (2).
Note that some societies expand (2) to include more punishment than just separation from society.

Because all this is happening out in the open, there's no secret conspiracy.
A conspiracy theorist thrives on being one of the few who know the actual truth.
how 99.9% of all public figures, “philosophers”, inventors, important rulers, generals, diplomats, and so on were all men?
Men got the credit for them, no matter who actually did the work.
It's not convenient, it's survivor bias.
Supermarkets exploit that behaviour by displaying per-person limits on merchandise. E.g. "limit 5 per person".
It works.
Not hypothetical. Ours is cursed already.
This level of pedantry is satisfying.
